Chapter 3 – The Drive That Could Destroy an Empire
Officer Daniel Brooks entered the security office with two detectives close behind. His expression remained calm until he noticed the frightened boy with a swollen cheek.
"Who struck the child?" he asked.
Every eye turned toward Richard Holloway.
Richard stepped forward confidently. "It was a misunderstanding. I believed he had stolen my wife's bracelet."
"The surveillance footage says otherwise," Linda Perez replied.
One detective collected copies of the video while Officer Brooks knelt beside Noah.
"Can you tell me what happened, son?"
Noah hesitated before answering. "He... he called me a thief."
Sarah wrapped an arm around her son.
"He attacked an eight-year-old in front of dozens of witnesses."
Richard cleared his throat. "I'm prepared to cover their medical expenses."
Sarah looked at him with quiet disgust.
"You still think money fixes everything."
Then she placed the black USB drive on the conference table.
The room became strangely silent.
Richard's face lost all color.
Officer Brooks noticed immediately.
"You seem very interested in that flash drive, Mr. Holloway."
"It means nothing," Richard answered too quickly.
Sarah slid the drive toward the officer.
"It means everything."
She took a slow breath before continuing.
"My late husband worked as Chief Financial Controller at Holloway Financial."
Richard's eyes widened.
"No..."
"He discovered a network of shell companies used to hide millions of dollars in illegal payments."
One detective leaned forward.
"Are you saying this drive contains financial evidence?"
Sarah nodded.
"My husband copied everything before he died."
Richard slammed his fist against the table.
"She's lying!"
Sarah never flinched.
"He wasn't killed in a car accident."
The words struck the room like thunder.
"He was murdered because he refused to destroy those records."
Richard's voice cracked for the first time.
"You can't prove that."
Sarah looked directly at him.
"I don't have to."
She gently pushed the USB into Officer Brooks' hand.
"The evidence can."
The officer carefully sealed the drive inside an evidence bag.
Richard watched it disappear.
