Chapter 2 – Secrets Hidden in Plain Sight

Silence settled over the crowded atrium.

Richard's heartbeat pounded louder than the murmuring crowd.

He stared at the tiny black USB drive as if it were a loaded weapon.

"No," he muttered. "That's impossible."

Sarah slipped the drive back into her hand before anyone else could see it clearly.

"You know exactly what this is."

Richard forced a laugh.

"I've never seen that in my life."

But the confidence in his voice had vanished.

One of the security officers stepped between them.

"Sir, Ma'am, we'd like everyone to come to the security office while we review the surveillance footage."

Richard adjusted his cufflinks.

"Excellent idea."

He glanced toward the growing audience.

"You'll all see this woman using her child to distract shoppers."

Sarah didn't respond.

Instead, she carefully wiped the blood from Noah's cheek.

"Does it hurt?"

He nodded quietly.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

"You did nothing wrong."

Inside the security office, multiple camera feeds covered one wall.

Mall manager Linda Perez entered carrying a tablet.

"We've already located the footage."

Richard crossed his arms confidently.

"Play it."

The video rolled.

Everyone watched Noah walking beside his mother, never coming within several feet of Richard's wife.

Then another angle appeared.

A woman in an elegant white coat casually brushed past Mrs. Holloway.

Within seconds, the diamond bracelet disappeared into the woman's oversized handbag.

The suspect calmly exited through another entrance.

The room fell silent.

Richard's face turned pale.

His wife stared at the screen in disbelief.

"That's... that's not the boy."

"No," Linda answered firmly.

"It never was."

Richard slowly turned toward Sarah.

"I..."

Before he could finish, Sarah interrupted.

"You hit my son without evidence."

Richard lowered his eyes.

"I'm willing to compensate you."

Sarah almost laughed.

"You think this is about money?"

She reached into her purse once more.

The USB rested in her palm.

Richard's breathing became uneven.

"What do you want?"

Sarah looked directly into his eyes.

"I want the truth."

Outside the office windows, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the entrance.

Police had arrived.

May you like

Richard thought they were there because of the assault.

He had no idea they were only the beginning of everything that was about to collapse.
