Chapter 5 - MICHAEL’S FILE

I spent that night going through every document connected to Michael.
Grief has a strange memory.
For years, I remembered the big things.
The hospital.
The funeral.
Sophie asking why Daddy would not wake up.
But now smaller details returned.
Michael changing his phone password.
Michael checking the street before leaving home.
Michael once asking whether I had told anyone about our savings.
At the time, I thought he was stressed.
Now I wondered what he had known.
Detective Cole warned me not to connect Michael’s death to the Vale documents without evidence.
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
“No.”
He almost smiled.
“Fair answer.”
Michael’s death certificate listed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
A hereditary thickening of the heart muscle.
Except no one else in his family had it.
And Michael had passed a full cardiac examination two years before his death.
Cole requested the medical records.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Preston moved faster.
The hotel recovered another camera angle.
It showed Preston placing something into a small flower-girl pouch.
Sophie’s pouch.
He did it twelve minutes before accusing her.
The object was not visible clearly enough to identify.
But the intention was obvious.
When police searched Preston’s vehicle, they found wood fibers matching the broken menu board.
That did not matter much.
Everyone had seen him swing it.
What mattered was found in the trunk.
A black velvet jewelry case.
Empty.
Cassandra identified it as the bracelet’s case.
Preston was arrested on charges connected to assaulting Sophie and tampering with evidence.
Margaret remained free.
For two days.
Then police found the missing bracelet.
It had been hidden inside a maintenance cabinet in the hotel basement.
Margaret’s fingerprints were on the interior wrapping.
She claimed she had been trying to protect Cassandra from a scandal.
No one believed her.
But that still did not explain why Sophie had been framed.
Cassandra found the answer.
The wedding contract.
Vale Hospitality had been preparing for a major merger with Brighton Capital.
The merger vote was scheduled for Monday.
Cassandra’s wedding was Saturday.
The trust documents would have given Cassandra enough authority to stop the merger.
Preston needed her distracted.
Margaret needed the safe key.
And Sophie?
Sophie had accidentally seen Margaret carrying the key earlier that afternoon.
My daughter had picked it up after it fell near the bridal suite.
She had asked Margaret what it opened.
Margaret took it back.
But now she knew Sophie had seen it.
The theft accusation served two purposes.
Create chaos.
And make Sophie look dishonest before she could repeat anything she had heard.
The broken menu board had not been part of the plan.
That was Preston losing control.
But losing control had exposed everything.
Cassandra looked at me across her father’s old office.
“My brother nearly injured your daughter to steal my company.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
She looked confused.
“He did it because he thought he could.”
That difference mattered.
