Chapter 15 - THE MAN AT THE ALTAR

Ethan denied everything.
Then investigators showed him the transfer draft.
Five hundred thousand dollars from a trust controlled by his private investment company.
He changed his story.
Margaret had approached him three months before the wedding.
She told him Cassandra was emotionally unstable and might destroy the company if she gained control.
Ethan believed preserving the merger would protect Cassandra financially.
That was his first explanation.
Then Cassandra asked him one question.
“How much were you getting from Brighton?”
He went silent.
The merger agreement contained a hidden side arrangement.
If the transaction closed, Ethan’s investment group would receive nearly six million dollars in advisory fees.
Cassandra laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because betrayal had become repetitive.
“You were going to marry me while helping my mother steal my company.”
Ethan looked at her.
“I love you.”
“No.”
Her voice remained calm.
“You loved the version of me that didn’t ask questions.”
He stepped forward.
“Cassandra.”
She took off her engagement ring.
It was the ring she should have worn while saying vows three days earlier.
Instead, she placed it on the conference table.
“Your wedding ended before I reached the aisle.”
Ethan’s face broke.
Cassandra turned away.
I followed her outside.
She made it to the parking garage before she cried.
Not loudly.
She leaned against a concrete pillar and covered her face.
I stood beside her.
After a minute, she said, “I almost married him.”
“You didn’t.”
“I would have.”
“You didn’t.”
She looked at me.
“What if Sophie hadn’t seen the key?”
I knew the answer.
“You would have married him.”
She closed her eyes.
“And the merger would have happened.”
“Yes.”
“And Preston would still control everything.”
“Yes.”
She began crying again.
I put my arm around her.
Sometimes the truth does not arrive because you were clever.
Sometimes it arrives because one small thing goes wrong for the people lying to you.
A key falls.
A child notices.
A camera records.
A man loses his temper.
And suddenly a structure built over years begins collapsing in minutes.
The next day, Ethan accepted a cooperation agreement.
He gave investigators emails.
Bank records.
Private meetings.
And one piece of information no one expected.
Margaret had been trying to sell her shares.
To Brighton.
Quietly.
If Cassandra’s original trust became enforceable, Margaret’s shares alone were not enough to control the deal.
But if Cassandra were declared legally incapable of managing her holdings, a temporary family trustee could be appointed.
Margaret had already prepared the petition.
The filing was scheduled for the Monday after the wedding.

And attached to the draft petition were statements claiming Cassandra had suffered a mental breakdown.
Statements signed by Ethan.
