Chapter 11 - SOPHIE REMEMBERS

Children remember things differently.
Not in timelines.
In pictures.
Smells.
Words.
Sophie was drawing at the kitchen table when she suddenly said, “Mr. Preston had Mommy’s purple bag.”
I looked up.
“What purple bag?”
She frowned.
“The one at the wedding.”
“I didn’t have a purple bag.”
She shook her head.
“Not you.”
Then she pointed toward an old photograph of me and Michael on the shelf.
“Daddy’s Mommy.”
I stared at her.
Michael’s mother, Evelyn Bennett, had attended the wedding.
She had left early after the chaos.
I called her.
Evelyn became quiet when I asked about a purple bag.
“It was Michael’s.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“He gave it to me before he died.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“He made me promise.”
Anger rose immediately.
“What was inside?”
“I don’t know.”
“You never opened it?”
“No.”
“Where is it?”
Silence.
“Evelyn.”
“I brought it to the wedding.”
I stood.
“Why?”
“Because Cassandra’s father’s name was written on the tag.”
Evelyn explained that she had kept the bag hidden for years.
When she heard Cassandra was marrying Ethan, she decided the family connection might finally make it possible to return it.
She placed it inside a coatroom locker during the ceremony preparations.
Then the chaos happened.
When she returned, the bag was gone.
Sophie had seen Preston carrying it.
Now his attack on her looked even darker.
He may have realized she saw him with something connected to Michael.
Hotel footage confirmed Preston entering the coatroom.
There were no cameras inside.
He left carrying a folded purple garment bag.
His attorney claimed it contained wedding decorations.
Cassandra identified the bag immediately from the footage.
Preston was interviewed again.
This time, Cole asked only one question.
“Where is Michael Bennett’s bag?”
Preston stared at him.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Cole placed a still image on the table.
Preston looked down.
His silence lasted too long.
The search expanded to Preston’s properties.
House.
Office.
Storage unit.
Vacation cabin.
They found nothing.
Then Sophie remembered one more detail.
“Grandma Margaret took it.”
“When?”
“After Mr. Preston yelled.”
“Where?”
“She put it in the black car.”
Margaret’s driver was questioned.
He admitted Margaret gave him a purple bag and told him to deliver it somewhere.
“Where?”
He looked terrified.
“To the old Vale house.”
Cassandra stared.
The old Vale house had been empty since Richard died.
No one was supposed to be using it.
Police obtained a warrant.

They found the bag in the attic.
And inside was a laptop Michael had hidden eight years ago.
