Chapter 14 - HOWARD’S BETRAYAL

Howard missed a scheduled interview.

His house was empty.

His phone was off.

His car was found at the airport.

At first, everyone assumed he had fled.

Then Cole received a package.

No return address.

Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten note.

I helped them hide the money.

I did not help them kill anyone.

But I was too afraid to tell the difference.

The flash drive contained Howard’s private archive.

He had been keeping evidence against the Vales for years.

Insurance.

Not morality.

Among the files was a video recorded inside Margaret’s kitchen.

Richard sat at the table.

Margaret stood beside him preparing a drink.

The date was seven weeks before his death.

Nothing obviously criminal happened.

Then Preston entered.

He said, “How much is he taking?”

Margaret replied, “Enough.”

Richard was too far away to hear.

Preston asked, “And Bennett?”

Margaret lowered her voice.

“He’s watching.”

The recording ended.

Another file contained Howard speaking privately with Preston after Michael’s death.

Howard’s voice trembled.

“What did you do?”

Preston replied.

“Nothing you need to understand.”

“You threatened him.”

“I threaten everyone.”

“He’s dead.”

Preston became quiet.

Then said, “And you’re still alive because you know when to stop asking questions.”

The recording changed everything.

Still not a confession.

But the pattern became undeniable.

Howard’s note included one address.

A lakeside property in another state.

Police found him there.

He surrendered.

Why had he fled?

Because Margaret’s people contacted him.

“Which people?”

Howard gave a name.

Ethan Cole.

Cassandra’s fiancé.

The man who was supposed to marry her.

Cassandra stared at the interview transcript as though it were written in another language.

“Ethan?”

Howard nodded.

“He told me Margaret knew I was cooperating.”

“That doesn’t mean he works for her.”

“No.”

Howard looked ashamed.

“But he offered me money to leave.”

Cassandra stopped breathing.

“How much?”

“Half a million.”

The betrayal tore through her differently than everything else.

Preston was her brother.

Margaret was her mother.

She had already begun grieving them before the wedding.

Ethan was supposed to be the person standing outside the wreckage.

Instead, he had been inside it.
