CHAPTER 1 — THE ENVELOPE

The moment my father stepped into the bridal suite, the air changed.
Not slowly.
Instantly.
Like someone had opened a door into a storm.
He didn’t look at me first.
He looked at the dress.
Or what was left of it.
His hands tightened around a cream-colored envelope so hard I thought it might tear.
Joan’s confidence—gone.
Madison’s smile—frozen.
My father finally spoke.
“Everyone downstairs. Now.”
Joan tried to laugh.
Too fast. Too sharp.
“Thomas, this is ridiculous. It’s just a dress—”
But he raised his hand.
Not shouting.
Not arguing.
Just ending it.
“It’s not about the dress.”
Silence fell so heavy it felt physical.
Then he looked at me.
May you like
And something in his eyes broke.
Like he had finally seen everything he had refused to see for years.
