Chapter 10: The Enemy Inside the House

The photograph was only five inches wide.
A simple image.
A little girl sitting at the kitchen table.
Her dark hair falling over her face.
Her tiny hands wrapped around a cup of milk.
A normal moment.
A peaceful moment.
Except Ethan knew one thing.
Nobody should have been able to take it.
Because Lily was inside his home.
Inside his security system.
Inside the place where he had spent millions making sure nothing unexpected could happen.
Yet someone had entered.
Someone had watched his daughter.
Someone had taken a picture.
And someone wanted him to know.
Ethan didn't sleep.
Not even for a minute.
By sunrise, the Caldwell estate looked different.
Security guards stood at every entrance.
The cameras were being replaced.
Every employee was being questioned.
The house that once represented luxury now felt like a crime scene.
Rosa noticed immediately.
She stood in the hallway holding Lily's hand.
"What happened?"
Ethan turned.
He wanted to lie.
To protect her.
But he had already learned what secrets created.
Pain.
"I received a threat."
Rosa's face changed.
"What kind of threat?"
Ethan looked at Lily.
Then back at Rosa.
"Someone took a picture of her yesterday."
Rosa went pale.
Lily looked up.
"Of me?"
Ethan immediately softened his voice.
"Yes."
"Why?"
That question destroyed him.
Because he didn't have an answer.
He crouched down beside her.
"Because some people do bad things when they are afraid."
Lily thought for a moment.
"Are they afraid of me?"
Ethan swallowed.
"No."
He looked at her.
"They are afraid because they don't understand how special you are."
For the first time, Lily smiled.
A small smile.
But Ethan felt it like something enormous.
Because that smile was something he had missed for three years without even knowing.
Later that morning, Daniel Brooks arrived with unexpected news.
"Ethan."
The attorney entered the office carrying a folder.
"We found the security breach."
Ethan looked up.
"Who?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Someone who had access to the house."
Ethan's expression darkened.
"An employee?"
"No."
Daniel placed the folder down.
"Someone higher."
Inside was a list of authorized access.
One name was highlighted.
Victoria Haynes.
The room became silent.
Ethan stared.
"Victoria?"
Daniel nodded.
"Her security clearance was upgraded three weeks ago."
"By who?"
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Your father."
Ethan leaned back.
Richard Caldwell.
Even dead, his father's decisions were still controlling his life.
"That doesn't mean she took the picture."
"No."
Daniel agreed.
"But it means she could."
Ethan found Victoria in the ballroom.
She was standing beside the untouched wedding decorations.
The flowers had started to wilt.
Nobody had bothered replacing them.
For the first time, Victoria looked less like a future billionaire's wife.
She looked like someone who had lost control.
"Ethan."
He didn't smile.
"Did you enter Lily's room?"
Victoria froze.
"What?"
"Did you take a picture of my daughter?"
The accusation hurt.
Not because it was unfair.
Because she understood why he asked.
"No."
Her answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Ethan watched her carefully.
"Then why did my father's security system give you access?"
Victoria looked away.
And Ethan noticed.
"You knew."
Her silence answered.
"Victoria."
She closed her eyes.
"I didn't know what he was doing."
"Who?"
"Your father."
The words surprised him.
"You worked with him?"
Victoria looked ashamed.
"Not like that."
"Then explain."
She sat down slowly.
"When I met you, I thought it was fate."
Ethan said nothing.
"But Richard Caldwell contacted my father before I ever met you."
Ethan's face hardened.
"Why?"
"Because he wanted a certain type of woman around you."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"Someone wealthy. Someone connected. Someone who would never embarrass the family."
She looked at him.
"I thought he was just being controlling."
"And now?"
"Now I think he was building a cage."
For years, Victoria had believed she was the winner.
She had the diamond.
The mansion.
The billionaire fiancé.
The perfect future.
But now she realized something terrifying.
She had not entered Ethan's world.
She had been placed there.
Like a piece on a chessboard.
And someone else was playing.
"I want to help you."
Ethan looked surprised.
"Why?"
Victoria looked toward the wedding decorations.
"Because I finally understand something."
"What?"
"I was never the woman who was supposed to destroy Rosa."
A pause.
"I was the woman who was supposed to distract you from finding her."
That afternoon, Ethan made another call.
This time, not to Daniel.
Not to security.
To someone outside the Caldwell world.
"Agent Miller."
A calm voice answered.
"Ethan Caldwell."
The agent recognized him immediately.
"Didn't expect your call."
"I need help."
A pause.
"With what?"
Ethan looked at the photograph of Lily.
"Someone inside my family has been hiding information, manipulating records, and threatening my daughter."
The line went quiet.
Then:
"Send me everything."
Three hours later, the FBI began reviewing the Caldwell files.
And they found something unexpected.
A pattern.
Missing documents.
Changed records.
Payments through hidden accounts.
But one detail stood out.
A payment made four years ago.
Before Lily was born.
Before Ethan's engagement.
Before anyone knew about Rosa.
The recipient wasn't a security company.
It wasn't a lawyer.
It wasn't a private investigator.
It was a person.
A woman.
The FBI agent stared at the name.
"Ethan..."
He turned the screen toward him.
Ethan looked.
And felt the world stop.
Because the person who received the money was someone he had trusted his entire life.
Someone who had hugged him after his mother's funeral.
Someone who claimed she was protecting him.
Someone who had cried when Lily fell.
Claire Caldwell.
Ethan stared at the name.
"No."
The agent looked serious.
"The records don't lie."
"But Claire helped me."
"Maybe."
The agent paused.
"Or maybe she wanted you to believe she did."
That night, Ethan returned home.
He found Claire sitting alone in the east parlor.
Beside the piano.
The same piano where everything started.
She looked up.
"You know."
It wasn't a question.
Ethan stopped.
"How much did you hide from me?"
Claire's eyes filled.
"Ethan..."
"How much?"
A long silence.
Then Claire whispered:
"Almost everything."
The lights flickered.
For one second, the room went dark.
When they came back on...
Claire was holding an old envelope.
Something Ethan had never seen before.
"I was going to tell you."
She looked terrified.
"But I didn't know how."
Ethan stared at the envelope.
"What is it?"
Claire's hands shook.
"The truth about the night Rosa left."
Ethan stepped closer.
"Give it to me."
Claire hesitated.
Because she knew.
May you like
Once he opened that envelope...
Their family would never be the same again.
