Chapter 15: The Woman Behind the Secret

Rosa stood frozen in the dark hallway.

The phone pressed against her ear.

Her hand trembled.

She knew that voice.

She had spent three years trying to forget it.

Three years trying to convince herself that the past was finished.

But some voices never disappear.

Some memories never die.

"Who are you?"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

The person on the other end laughed softly.

"You already know."

Rosa's face lost all color.

"No."

"Yes."

The voice became colder.

"It's time you stopped hiding behind Ethan Caldwell."

Rosa looked toward Lily's bedroom.

Her daughter was sleeping peacefully.

Completely unaware that the past had returned.

"Leave my daughter alone."

A pause.

Then:

"That is exactly why I am calling."

Rosa's breathing stopped.

"What does that mean?"

"You still don't understand."

The voice lowered.

"Lily was never the problem."

Across the city, Ethan sat inside his car.

He had not moved for ten minutes.

Claire's confession kept repeating in his mind.

I never gave it to you.

The message.

The hospital message.

The message that could have changed everything.

If he had received it...

He would have gone.

He would have been there when Lily was born.

He would have held her first.

He would have seen Rosa.

Maybe everything would have been different.

Maybe three years wouldn't have been stolen.

But one question remained.

Why?

Why would Claire do that?

Why would his sister, the person who loved him most, take away the truth?

When Ethan returned home, Claire was waiting.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had spent hours preparing herself for this moment.

"You know now."

Ethan didn't answer.

"You know what I did."

"Yes."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Claire looked down.

"I was wrong."

"Why?"

One word.

But it carried everything.

Why did you betray me?

Why did you protect him?

Why did you let me lose my daughter?

Claire sat down.

"Because I was scared."

Ethan stared.

"Of Father?"

"No."

She looked at him.

"Of losing you."

The answer confused him.

"What?"

Claire wiped her tears.

"Father told me that if Rosa came into your life, everything would collapse."

"That's what he wanted you to believe."

"I know that now."

She looked toward the piano.

"But back then, I was twenty-six years old. I had spent my entire life believing Father knew best."

Ethan said nothing.

"He told me Rosa was using you."

His expression hardened.

"He told me she wanted money."

"I know."

"And you believed him?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"At first."

The honesty hurt.

"But then I met Rosa."

A pause.

"And I realized Father was lying."

Claire remembered that night.

The night she met Rosa at the hospital.

Rosa was exhausted.

Holding newborn Lily.

Still recovering.

Still alone.

Claire had expected someone selfish.

Someone looking for wealth.

Instead, she found a woman who refused every offer of money.

A woman who only asked one thing:

"Please don't let Ethan think I abandoned him."

Claire remembered those words.

They haunted her.

Because Rosa wasn't trying to steal Ethan.

She was trying to protect him.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Ethan asked.

Claire looked broken.

"Because by the time I understood the truth, Father had already gone too far."

"What does that mean?"

Claire hesitated.

Then:

"He threatened Rosa."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"How?"

"He told her if she contacted you, he would destroy your company."

A pause.

"And then he threatened me."

"What did he threaten?"

Claire looked away.

"He said he would make sure everyone believed I was the reason our mother died."

Ethan froze.

"What?"

Claire nodded.

"He had documents. Fake ones. He said he could ruin me."

The room became silent.

Richard Caldwell had not just controlled people.

He had trapped them.

Then Ethan noticed something.

"Claire."

She looked up.

"Who called Rosa tonight?"

Claire's expression changed.

"What?"

"Someone contacted her."

Fear appeared on Claire's face.

"What did they say?"

"That Lily was never the problem."

Claire went completely still.

"Ethan..."

"What?"

Her voice dropped.

"That's not possible."

"What isn't?"

Claire looked terrified.

"That person."

"Who?"

She whispered:

"The only person who knew that phrase."

At that moment, the front doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Rosa entered.

But she wasn't alone.

Behind her stood an older woman.

Elegant.

Composed.

Carrying a black handbag.

Ethan recognized her immediately.

His face changed.

Because he knew that face from old family photographs.

A woman who had disappeared from the Caldwell world decades ago.

A woman his father never mentioned.

A woman his mother wrote about in her journal.

"Who is she?"

Ethan whispered.

Rosa looked at him.

Her expression was filled with fear.

"Her name is..."

The older woman interrupted.

"I think introductions are unnecessary."

She stepped forward.

"My name is Eleanor Voss."

Ethan froze.

Because the name meant something.

A name from his mother's journal.

A name connected to Richard Caldwell's first secret.

The forgotten chapter of his family.

Eleanor Voss looked around the mansion.

The house where she had once been rejected.

The house where secrets were buried.

Then she looked at Ethan.

"You look exactly like him."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Who are you?"

She smiled sadly.

"The woman your father abandoned before he married your mother."

Silence.

Claire gasped.

Daniel, standing near the doorway, froze.

Ethan stared.

"No."

Eleanor nodded.

"Yes."

A pause.

"I am Richard Caldwell's first wife."

Nobody moved.

Because that changed everything.

Richard Caldwell had not only hidden a child.

He had hidden an entire life.

Eleanor placed a folder on the table.

"I didn't come here to hurt you."

She looked at Ethan.

"I came here because your father left behind one final secret."

Ethan opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Richard Caldwell.

Standing beside another person.

A person Ethan recognized.

A person who had been controlling the family from the shadows.

The photograph fell from Ethan's hand.

Because the person beside his father was someone impossible.

Someone everyone thought was innocent.

May you like

Someone who had been helping them search for the truth.

Victoria Haynes.
