Chapter 8: The Child Nobody Knew About

The words refused to leave Ethan Caldwell's mind.

Ask Rosa why she never told you about the second child.

He had read the sentence twenty times.

Maybe thirty.

Each time hoping the meaning would change.

It didn't.

A second child.

Another secret.

Another piece of his life that had existed without him.

Ethan had spent years believing he was a man who could predict every outcome.

Business deals.

Market changes.

People's intentions.

He had built an empire because he trusted his instincts.

But now he was standing in his own home, realizing the most important parts of his life had been hidden right under his nose.

First Lily.

Now this.

And the only person who could answer was Rosa.

Rosa found him in the east parlor.

The piano sat between them.

The same piano where everything had changed.

Where his daughter had fallen.

Where his entire future had shifted.

"You wanted to talk?"

Her voice was careful.

Ethan noticed that.

She was always careful around him.

Like she was afraid one wrong word would make him disappear again.

He hated that.

"I received something."

Rosa looked at him.

"What?"

He handed her the paper.

The moment she read it, the color drained from her face.

Ethan saw it.

The reaction.

The fear.

The confirmation.

"Rosa."

She slowly folded the paper.

"Ethan..."

"Is there another child?"

Silence.

A painful, endless silence.

Then Rosa sat down.

And Ethan knew.

The answer was yes.

"His name was Mateo."

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

"Was?"

Rosa nodded.

"He was born before Lily."

The room became completely still.

"How old?"

"Five."

Ethan stared.

Five years old.

Another child.

Another person carrying his blood.

Another life he had never known.

"Where is he?"

Rosa looked down.

"He passed away."

Ethan's expression changed.

"When?"

"Two years ago."

The words broke something inside him.

Two years ago.

While he was attending business meetings.

While he was buying companies.

While he was preparing for his perfect future with Victoria.

A child connected to him had died.

And he never knew.

"What happened?"

Rosa's eyes filled.

"Mateo was sick."

"What kind of sick?"

"Heart condition."

Ethan looked away.

Trying to process the impossible amount of pain arriving all at once.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Rosa closed her eyes.

"Because Mateo wasn't yours."

Ethan looked back.

"What?"

"He wasn't your biological son."

The confusion on Ethan's face was immediate.

"But this message..."

"It's a lie."

Rosa's voice became firm.

"The person who sent that knew exactly what would hurt you."

Ethan stood silently.

"So someone is playing with me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Rosa looked toward the piano.

"Because someone doesn't want you looking at the past."

That night, Ethan couldn't sleep.

He sat in his office surrounded by old files.

Every document from the last five years.

Every business deal.

Every personal record.

Every connection.

He was searching for a pattern.

And at 3:14 in the morning, he found one.

A name.

A company.

A payment.

Three years ago, shortly after Rosa disappeared, a private security company received a large payment from Caldwell Holdings.

The reason listed:

"Family Protection Services."

Ethan stared at the screen.

Family protection.

The same words his father always used.

But this wasn't protection.

This was surveillance.

The next morning, Ethan confronted Daniel.

"Find everything about this company."

Daniel looked at the file.

"You think your father hired them?"

"I know he did."

Daniel hesitated.

"There is something else."

"What?"

"The company wasn't only monitoring Rosa."

Ethan looked up.

"Who else?"

Daniel placed another file down.

"Your mother."

Ethan froze.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"Why would she monitor Rosa?"

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph Ethan had never seen.

It showed Eleanor Caldwell sitting across from Rosa at a small café.

Rosa was pregnant.

And Eleanor looked terrified.

Meanwhile, Victoria Haynes was discovering her own secrets.

She returned home to find a package waiting.

No sender.

Inside was a flash drive.

She plugged it into her laptop.

One video appeared.

Date:

Three years earlier.

She pressed play.

The screen showed Richard Caldwell.

Ethan's father.

And another person.

Victoria herself.

But younger.

Confused.

Sitting in the Caldwell mansion.

Richard's voice filled the room.

"You understand what your role is."

Victoria watched herself nod.

"Ethan needs stability."

Richard continued.

"He needs a woman who understands his position."

Victoria's face went pale.

Because she remembered.

She had forgotten.

Or maybe she had forced herself to forget.

The arrangement.

The conversation.

The reason Richard Caldwell had encouraged her relationship with Ethan.

She wasn't chosen because Ethan loved her.

She was chosen because she fit a plan.

That evening, Ethan received a call.

It was Claire.

Her voice sounded frightened.

"Ethan."

"What happened?"

"I found something."

"What?"

A pause.

Then:

"Mother left a letter."

Ethan stood.

"Where?"

"In her private safe."

"Claire..."

"I never opened it because I was scared."

"Scared of what?"

Claire whispered:

"Because the letter has your name on it."

Twenty minutes later, Claire handed Ethan the envelope.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His mother's.

The woman who had loved him more than anyone.

The woman who died without explaining.

On the front were six words:

For Ethan. Read after you know Lily.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was only one page.

One sentence made him stop breathing.

"My son, I failed you. But the truth about Rosa is not the only truth your father buried."

Ethan continued reading.

And then he saw the final line.

His mother's warning.

"If you are reading this, it means they failed to stop you from finding your daughter."

Ethan slowly lowered the letter.

Because suddenly he understood.

This had never been about a maid.

It had never been about a secret child.

May you like

It had always been about power.

And someone had been willing to destroy anyone who threatened it.
