Chapter 17 - The Fire Alarm

Doreen had entered using an employee badge registered to Martin Kline.

Kline was already in custody.

The badge should have been disabled.

Someone had reactivated it.

Again, Doreen needed only one person inside.

The fire alarm sent staff toward designated evacuation routes.

Doreen moved against the flow.

Security footage showed her wearing scrubs beneath a long coat.

She entered the maternity records office.

Then disappeared.

Leah and Caleb were no longer on that floor.

Doreen did not know.

Police rushed Leah and Caleb into a secured room.

Nathan was moved separately.

Simone remained in a monitored maternity room.

Mae coordinated with hospital security.

Then another alarm sounded.

This one came from Simone’s room.

Her baby’s heart rate had dropped.

Mae ran.

Leah watched through the small window as staff moved Simone toward labor and delivery.

Everything became chaos.

That was when Doreen appeared.

Not in the hallway.

Inside Leah’s room.

A connecting service door opened behind the bathroom.

Doreen stepped through.

Leah froze.

Doreen looked tired.

No pearls.

No perfect coat.

Just a woman whose control was collapsing.

Her eyes moved immediately to Caleb.

“Give him to me.”

Leah stood between them.

“No.”

“Don’t make this harder.”

“You forged records.”

“I protected my family.”

“You tried to have me committed.”

“You needed help.”

“You were taking my son.”

Doreen’s expression hardened.

“He is a Carver.”

“He is my child.”

“He is the future of this family.”

“He is not a bank account.”

Doreen stepped closer.

“You don’t understand what I built.”

Leah almost laughed.

“I understand exactly what you built.”

She lifted her phone.

The recorder was running.

Doreen noticed.

“Put that down.”

“No.”

Doreen moved toward her.

Leah backed against the bassinet.

“You took Claire and Rose.”

Doreen stopped.

“You reopened that?”

“You destroyed their childhood.”

“They were disobedient.”

“You destroyed your husband.”

Doreen’s face changed.

Only slightly.

Leah saw it.

“Charles was leaving you.”

“He was weak.”

“Did you kill him?”

Silence.

Leah’s heart hammered.

Doreen looked toward the door.

Then back at Leah.

“Charles made a choice.”

“What choice?”

“To threaten everything I had built.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Doreen leaned closer.

“He should never have turned his back on me near those stairs.”

Leah stopped breathing.

It was not a full confession.

But it was enough.

Doreen realized it one second too late.

She lunged for the phone.

Leah shoved the bassinet backward.

The room door burst open.

Mae entered with two security officers.

Doreen grabbed the bassinet handle.

Caleb woke screaming.

Leah screamed too.

“Get away from him!”

Doreen pulled.

Leah held the other side.

For one terrible second, the bassinet moved between them.

Then Nathan appeared in the doorway.

He saw his mother.

He saw Leah.

He saw his newborn son crying between them.

Doreen shouted.

“Nathan, help me!”

Everything stopped.

For thirty-four years, Nathan had obeyed that voice.

This time, he walked toward his mother.

And pulled her hands away from his son.
