Chapter 12 - Doreen’s Safe Box

The safe-deposit box was opened under warrant.

Inside was no cash.

No jewelry.

No passports.

Only records.

Doreen had preserved everything.

Payments to Dr. Rusk.

Payments to Victor Lane.

Emails from Martin Kline.

Copies of psychiatric assessments.

Private messages from relatives asking how quickly custody could be transferred.

She had kept evidence because evidence was leverage.

Leah understood Doreen better every hour.

She trusted nobody.

So she made sure everyone had a reason to fear her.

One envelope carried Nathan’s name.

Inside were copies of gambling debts Leah never knew existed.

More than two hundred thousand dollars.

Nathan had borrowed from Doreen repeatedly.

In exchange, he signed agreements promising a percentage of future family trust income.

When Caleb was born, Nathan stood to gain access to funds.

But only if the family-controlled guardianship structure remained intact.

Leah sat silently while Detective Mills explained it.

Nathan had not simply been weak.

He had been desperate.

His mother owned his debt.

His secrets.

His future.

And he had decided Leah and Caleb were acceptable collateral.

Another envelope contained photographs of Dr. Rusk meeting Doreen at restaurants.

One note included the words.

LEAH - EXPECTED DELIVERY AUGUST.

PREPARE CONSULT.

Doreen had planned the psychiatric evaluation before Leah ever had the nightmare.

The nightmare had simply given them material.

Leah felt strangely relieved.

Her fear had not caused the plan.

Her emotions had not caused the plan.

Nothing she did had caused it.

They had been waiting for something they could use.

Then detectives opened a final envelope.

It contained a copy of Doreen’s late husband’s trust.

Charles Carver had created an education and family legacy fund.

The first male great-grandchild triggered a distribution.

But Doreen had lied about one critical detail.

The money did not belong to the child’s guardian.

It belonged to the child.

The guardian could manage limited funds for the child’s benefit, subject to oversight.

Nathan stared at the document.

“She told me she controlled all of it.”

Detective Mills looked at him.

“She manipulated you too.”

Nathan almost looked relieved.

Leah did not let him have that relief.

“She manipulated you.”

She met his eyes.

“You still chose to help her.”

Nathan lowered his head.

That afternoon, police located Victor Lane.

He had left his law office.

His car was found near the airport.

He was not on any flight.

Simone received a text from him.

COME HOME.

WE CAN FIX THIS.

She showed the message to police.

Then another arrived.

DOREEN HAS LOST CONTROL.

Leah felt a flicker of hope.

Then the third message appeared.

SHE TOOK THE BABY RECORDS.

ALL OF THEM.

Detective Mills asked.

“What baby records?”

Simone looked pale.

“I think he means the original identity documents.”

Mae understood first.

“Birth registration.”

Leah stood despite the pain.

“What can she do with that?”

Mae answered quietly.

“If she has enough internal access, she can try to create a second chain of paperwork.”

Leah looked down at Caleb.

May you like

Doreen had failed to take the baby physically.

So she was trying to take him on paper.
