Chapter 14 - The Camera in Their Bedroom

Nathan watched the video twice.

“I don’t remember that.”

Leah stared at him.

“You’re standing there.”

“I know.”

“Then explain it.”

He covered his mouth.

“That was after the miscarriage.”

Leah remembered those weeks only in fragments.

Grief.

Medication prescribed for sleep.

Nathan making tea.

Doreen staying overnight.

Leah crying so hard some mornings she could barely dress.

Nathan whispered.

“Mom said we needed evidence that you weren’t coping.”

Leah’s chest tightened.

“So you filmed me.”

“She said it was for your doctor.”

“While I was sleeping?”

“I know how it looks.”

Leah laughed bitterly.

“How it looks?”

She pointed at the screen.

“You participated in building a case against me two years before Caleb was born.”

Nathan shook his head.

“I didn’t know she was going to use it for custody.”

“You knew she wanted evidence.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped.”

He began crying again.

Leah was tired of his tears.

Nathan’s remorse always arrived after the danger had passed.

Detective Mills took the phone.

The metadata showed multiple videos had been copied from Nathan’s private cloud account.

Doreen had access.

One video showed Leah crying.

Another showed her asleep after medication.

Another captured an argument in which Leah shouted that she wished she could disappear.

Doreen had clipped the sentence.

The rest of the argument was missing.

Leah remembered what she had actually said.

“I wish I could disappear for one day and wake up before we lost the baby.”

Doreen removed the second half.

Now it sounded suicidal.

The pattern was clear.

She did not invent every piece of evidence.

She altered context.

She took real grief and turned it into pathology.

Real exhaustion and turned it into instability.

Real fear and turned it into paranoia.

Dr. Vale prepared a written assessment explaining the manipulation.

Mae documented every interaction she personally witnessed.

Simone gave police the full video showing Kline providing Doreen with hospital access.

Then police received the break they needed.

Victor Lane turned himself in.

He wanted immunity.

He was not offered it.

So he settled for cooperation.

Victor admitted helping Doreen prepare emergency guardianship petitions.

He admitted coaching relatives on what language made judges react quickly.

He admitted knowing some medical records were exaggerated.

Then he revealed Doreen’s current location.

“She owns an old farmhouse outside Delaware County.”

Detective Mills asked.

“Why would she go there?”

Victor looked toward Nathan.

“Because that’s where she keeps the originals.”

“What originals?”

“The records from the first case.”

Leah frowned.

“What first case?”

Victor hesitated.

“The one that started all of this.”

He looked at Nathan.

“Your sisters.”

Nathan went white.

“My sisters?”

Victor nodded.

“Doreen didn’t send them to boarding school.”

May you like

The room went silent.

“She had them removed.”
