Chapter 16 - The First Husband

Charles Carver died in what had been ruled an accidental fall.

He was found at the bottom of the basement stairs.

Doreen told Nathan he had slipped while carrying a box.

Claire remembered something different.

She had heard them arguing.

Charles accused Doreen of moving money.

Doreen accused him of trying to leave her with nothing.

The next morning, he was dead.

There had been no criminal investigation.

Doreen had been a respected widow with three grieving children.

Claire was thirteen.

Nobody treated her suspicion as evidence.

Instead, Doreen told doctors Claire was traumatized and paranoid.

That became the beginning of her removal.

Detective Mills requested the original police file.

Much of it had been destroyed under retention rules.

But one photograph survived.

Charles lay near the bottom of the stairs.

A broken banister piece rested beside him.

Claire stared at the photograph.

“That wasn’t broken before.”

Police reopened the death review.

Doreen’s financial motive became clear.

Charles had prepared divorce papers.

He had also drafted amendments removing Doreen as trustee of the family legacy fund.

The documents were never filed.

After his death, Doreen remained in control.

The same pattern again.

Money.

Resistance.

Medical or emotional allegations.

Removal.

Silence.

Nathan sat beside the window after hearing everything.

Leah entered only because Detective Mills asked her to.

Nathan did not look at her.

“My dad tried to stop her.”

“Yes.”

“My sisters tried to stop her.”

“Yes.”

“You tried.”

“Yes.”

“And I helped her.”

Leah said nothing.

Nathan finally turned.

“I need to tell you something else.”

Her stomach tightened.

“What?”

“The night before you were admitted.”

He swallowed.

“Mom asked me to put something in your tea.”

Leah went completely still.

“What?”

“She said it was a mild sleep aid.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

She stared at him.

Nathan nodded quickly.

“I swear.”

“Why would she want me sedated?”

“She said you needed rest before your appointment.”

Leah remembered waking from the nightmare.

The strange three-in-the-morning fear.

The appointment the next day.

Dr. Rusk recommending immediate admission.

Doreen’s plan was already moving.

Nathan continued.

“I threw it away.”

“Where?”

“The kitchen trash.”

Police searched the apartment.

The trash was long gone.

But Nathan had taken a photograph of the packet because something about it bothered him.

He found the image in his cloud storage.

Dr. Vale looked at it.

His face changed.

“That is not an ordinary sleep aid.”

Leah whispered.

“What would it have done?”

“In someone late in pregnancy?”

He chose his words carefully.

“Potentially caused confusion, heavy sedation, and memory problems.”

Exactly the symptoms Doreen wanted documented.

Then Mae called from the hospital.

Her voice was urgent.

“Leah, where is Caleb?”

Leah looked at the bassinet beside her.

“He’s with me.”

Mae exhaled.

“Thank God.”

“What happened?”

Mae lowered her voice.

“Someone just triggered a fire alarm on the secure floor.”

Leah’s heart stopped.

May you like

Then Mae added.

“And Doreen is inside the hospital.”
