Chapter 9 - THE EMPIRE OPENS

The Black Orchard files triggered one of the largest financial investigations in Illinois history.

Federal agents seized Hale Capital’s offices.

Trading was suspended.

Board members resigned within hours.

Television networks broadcast images of Lorraine entering federal court in handcuffs.

The woman who once controlled rooms with a glance now covered her face from cameras.

Ethan remained in county jail.

He refused to testify against her.

At first.

Then prosecutors showed him his adoption file.

Lorraine had not rescued him from poverty.

She had purchased him from a broker for twenty thousand dollars.

His biological mother had been told he died shortly after birth.

Ethan stared at the paperwork for nearly an hour.

Then he requested a meeting with Claire.

She almost refused.

Mara reminded her that listening did not require forgiveness.

They met through reinforced glass.

Ethan looked smaller in jail clothes.

His confidence had collapsed without the house, the company, and Lorraine beside him.

“You knew she killed my mother,” Claire said.

“I suspected.”

“How long?”

“Three years.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Three years earlier, Ethan found Evelyn’s file inside Lorraine’s private safe.

He confronted his mother.

Lorraine offered him control of Hale Capital if he remained silent.

He accepted.

“You sold the truth about my mother.”

“I was afraid of losing everything.”

“You burned my hand because I found what you chose.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I did not plan that.”

“You dragged me to the stove.”

“I lost control.”

“No.”

Claire leaned toward the glass.

“You used control.”

Ethan looked away.

He offered to explain Black Orchard in exchange for Claire asking prosecutors to reduce his sentence.

“I will not make promises.”

“Then why should I help?”

“Because thousands of people lost money.”

The answer surprised her.

Perhaps it was manipulation.

Perhaps the truth had finally reached him.

Ethan revealed that the master account was protected by three encryption keys.

One belonged to him.

One belonged to Lorraine.

The third was assigned to Claire.

She had unknowingly carried it for years.

Her mother’s silver wristwatch contained a microscopic storage chip.

Claire remembered the watch.

It was inside a bank box opened after Evelyn’s death.

She and Mara retrieved it under federal supervision.

The chip unlocked the account.

More than three hundred million dollars appeared across dozens of jurisdictions.

But the transaction history revealed something worse.

A final transfer had been scheduled.

At midnight, every remaining dollar would move into an account controlled by someone identified only as E.M.

Claire stared at the initials.

Evelyn Morgan.

May you like

Her mother had been dead for twenty-three years.

Someone had been using her identity ever since.
