Chapter 3 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM

Claire was transported to St. Matthew’s Medical Center under police protection.

Doctors treated a deep second-degree burn across her right palm and fingers.

They warned that she might need surgery if nerve damage appeared.

Mara remained beside her.

Ethan arrived forty minutes later with an attorney.

He claimed the injury was accidental.

Lorraine claimed Claire had placed her hand on the stove during an emotional episode.

Neither explanation matched the recording.

Mara copied the memory card before surrendering it to detectives.

The audio was clear.

Ethan’s voice could be heard demanding that Claire place her hand down.

Her scream followed.

Then Lorraine said she needed to learn her place.

The kitchen camera was even more damaging.

It showed Ethan gripping Claire’s wrist with both hands.

It showed him pressing her palm onto the glowing stove.

It showed Lorraine watching calmly.

Detective Ava Ruiz paused the footage.

“Is this the first time he has hurt you?”

Claire looked at Mara.

Then she looked at the bandages around her hand.

“No.”

For nearly three years, Ethan had controlled her salary, transportation, friendships, and access to family accounts.

He did not always strike her.

Sometimes he broke her phone.

Sometimes he stood in the doorway for hours, refusing to let her leave a room.

Sometimes Lorraine reminded Claire that women who embarrassed powerful families disappeared from professional circles.

Claire had documented the financial threats.

She had not documented the bruises.

“I thought I could leave once I understood the money,” she said.

Detective Ruiz leaned closer.

“What money?”

Claire hesitated.

Ethan was the chief executive of Hale Capital, a private investment firm managing more than two billion dollars.

Six months earlier, Claire noticed irregular transfers while preparing their personal tax records.

Small amounts had been moving from client accounts into companies registered in Delaware, Nevada, and the Cayman Islands.

The transfers looked like consulting fees.

The companies had no employees.

At least forty-seven million dollars had disappeared.

“I believe Ethan and his mother are stealing from their investors.”

Mara opened her laptop.

“She sent me encrypted spreadsheets last month.”

Detective Ruiz studied Claire.

“Why didn’t you report it?”

“I was building a complete chain of evidence.”

“And Ethan found out.”

Claire nodded.

Earlier that evening, he had entered the kitchen holding a printed reconciliation sheet.

The document proved someone had accessed the hidden accounts.

He demanded Claire’s password.

When she refused, he dragged her to the stove.

Detective Ruiz asked where the original files were stored.

“Not in the house.”

“Where?”

Claire looked toward the hospital-room door.

“Somewhere Ethan cannot reach.”

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Morgan, your husband is demanding to see you.”

“He is not my husband anymore.”

The nurse nodded.

“He also says your father has arrived.”

Claire’s breathing stopped.

Her father had died eight years earlier.

Mara and Detective Ruiz exchanged a glance.

Then a tall, silver-haired man appeared outside the glass wall.

Claire recognized him from old company photographs.

Richard Hale.

The man Lorraine had claimed was dead.
