Chapter 3 - The Marriage They Misunderstood

Julian stood in the driveway as Elena’s vehicle disappeared beyond the gates.

For six years, he had believed he understood his wife.

Elena had never worn extravagant jewelry.

She drove herself.

She rarely discussed money.

When Julian brought her to the Ashford estate for the first time, Eleanor had privately called her ordinary.

Elena had heard.

She had said nothing.

That silence had been mistaken for weakness.

By midnight, Julian understood his mistake.

He arrived at Ashford Global headquarters and discovered his executive badge no longer worked.

His assistant was waiting in the lobby.

“Mr. Ashford, the board has called an emergency meeting.”

“I am the chief executive.”

“Not anymore.”

Julian stared at her.

“What?”

She handed him a notice.

His suspension was effective immediately pending an independent investigation.

Julian ripped the paper in half.

“Who authorized this?”

A familiar voice answered from the mezzanine.

“I did.”

Elena descended the staircase beside Richard Hale.

She had changed from her dinner dress into a charcoal suit.

There was no hesitation in her steps.

Julian laughed bitterly.

“You?”

Elena reached the bottom.

“You should have read the refinancing documents your mother signed four years ago.”

Eleanor entered behind Julian.

“I read every page.”

“No.”

Elena looked at her.

“You read the summary Julian gave you.”

Richard placed a thick binder on the reception desk.

Four years earlier, Ashford Global had been days from violating its lending covenants.

Banks had prepared to call nearly nine hundred million dollars in debt.

A private holding company had quietly purchased the distressed obligations.

That company was Meridian Crown Holdings.

Eleanor remembered the name.

Everyone in finance knew it.

Very few people knew who controlled it.

Elena placed her hand on the binder.

“I do.”

Eleanor laughed.

“You expect me to believe you own Meridian Crown?”

“Not alone.”

Elena looked at Julian.

“But I control seventy-one percent of the voting shares.”

Julian’s face went blank.

“That company is worth billions.”

“Yes.”

“You told me your father left you a small investment portfolio.”

“He did.”

Elena paused.

“When I was nineteen.”

She looked toward the giant Ashford Global logo hanging above them.

“I turned it into Meridian.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

Elena stepped closer.

“The Ashfords didn’t rescue me from an ordinary life.”

Her eyes moved to Julian.

“I rescued this family from bankruptcy.”

Richard opened another folder.

“And tonight we discovered something worse than embezzlement.”

Julian’s face tightened.

Elena looked at him.

“There are transfers bearing my authorization.”

May you like

She paused.

“Except I never authorized them.”
