Chapter 19 - The Point of No Return
Julian was brought into the federal building that afternoon.
Elena placed the contract in front of him.
He stared at it.
Then closed his eyes.
“You told me you wanted out.”
“I did.”
“Six weeks ago?”
Julian said nothing.
“Look at me.”
He did.
“Why did you sign it?”
“My mother threatened Thomas.”
Elena’s expression remained cold.
“Try again.”
Julian swallowed.
“She threatened me.”
“With what?”
“Prison.”
Elena laughed once.
“You were already committing crimes.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She leaned toward him.
“You were still hoping to escape consequences.”
Julian’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Finally.
Truth without decoration.
He explained Eleanor’s final plan.
If Elena signed the estate documents, Meridian voting rights would gradually transfer into a marital trust.
If Elena refused, Eleanor intended to manufacture evidence that Elena was financially unstable.
The incapacitation clause would then activate.
Julian had signed because Eleanor promised him immunity from exposure.
“But I never used it.”
Julian said.
“You prepared to.”
“Yes.”
“You betrayed me six weeks ago.”
“Yes.”
“Then came to me yesterday pretending you finally chose the truth.”
Julian’s voice broke.
“I was trying to.”
“Too late.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Elena removed her wedding ring.
She placed it on the table between them.
Julian stared at it.
“I loved you.”
Elena said.
His face crumpled.
“I know.”
“That is exactly why you were able to hurt me this deeply.”
“Elena.”
She stood.
“I can forgive the man I loved.”
Hope flashed across his face.
Then she finished.
“But I will never trust the man you chose to become.”
She walked out.
That evening, federal prosecutors unsealed charges against Eleanor, Julian, Thomas, Peter Lawson, and several executives.
Thomas received consideration for cooperation.
Camille entered formal witness protection while the remaining conspiracy was investigated.
Julian agreed to plead guilty.
Eleanor refused every deal.
She demanded trial.
The following morning, Ashford Global’s shareholders gathered for the most important vote in company history.
The fraud findings had activated Charles’s trust amendment.
Elena now controlled the largest voting block.
Every camera in the financial world was pointed toward her.
The board expected her to break the company apart.
Employees feared thousands of layoffs.
Competitors prepared to buy the pieces.
Elena entered the meeting.
