Chapter 17 - Elena’s Counterattack

At 9:00 a.m., Eleanor began another television interview.
At 9:03, Elena entered Ashford Global headquarters.
Employees stopped working as she crossed the lobby.
Some looked frightened.
Others looked suspicious.
Elena ignored all of them.
At 9:10, Meridian Crown released an audited forensic report.
It demonstrated that Elena’s electronic credentials had been cloned.
At 9:14, Thomas Ashford surrendered to federal investigators and provided sworn testimony.
At 9:19, Julian Ashford did the same.
At 9:26, Camille Ross appeared alive at a federal courthouse.
News networks abandoned Eleanor’s interview.
Her supposed dead employee was now walking past cameras.
By 9:35, the story had transformed.
Elena scheduled a press conference for noon.
Eleanor called her personally.
Elena answered.
“You’re enjoying this.”
Eleanor’s voice remained controlled.
“No.”
Elena looked through the office windows.
“I’m ending it.”
“You think my sons can destroy me?”
“No.”
“Camille?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
“My father.”
For the first time, Eleanor said nothing.
Elena continued.
“David kept Charles’s blood test.”
Silence.
“He kept Keane’s statement.”
Eleanor breathed once.
“And he kept your letter.”
The call disconnected.
Twenty minutes later, Eleanor left the estate in a black sedan.
She did not go to Ashford Global.
She did not go to her attorneys.
She headed toward a private airfield.
Marcus tracked the vehicle through a lawful security alert on a company-owned car.
“She’s running.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“Then where is she going?”
“To get something.”
Eleanor had survived for decades by keeping leverage.
If she was abandoning everything, one final asset mattered more than the company.
Elena called investigators.
At the airfield, Eleanor never boarded the waiting jet.
Instead, she opened a private hangar.
Inside were hundreds of archival boxes.
Contracts.
Ledgers.
Photographs.
Recordings.
Evidence collected over thirty years.
Insurance against politicians.
Executives.
Bankers.
Even members of her own family.
Eleanor stepped inside.
Then stopped.
Elena was already waiting.
“You always arrive too late.”
Eleanor stared at her.
“How?”
Elena looked around the hangar.
“Because you taught me something.”
“What?”
“People like you never destroy leverage.”
Elena’s expression hardened.
“You store it.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Eleanor looked toward the door.
Then toward a metal cabinet beside her.
And smiled.
“You still don’t understand, Elena.”
She placed her hand on the cabinet.
“The evidence in here doesn’t destroy me.”
May you like
Her smile widened.
“It destroys your father.”
