Chapter 12 - Everyone Had Chosen Her

Thomas did not deny it.

When Elena confronted him, he sat silently for almost a minute.

Then he nodded.

“I introduced Julian to you.”

Elena’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Why?”

“Mother told me Ashford Global would collapse unless we gained influence over Meridian.”

“So you offered me to your brother.”

“I told myself it was business.”

“You told yourself a lot of things.”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“At first, yes.”

Elena turned away.

Thomas continued.

“But I didn’t know Mother intended to steal your credentials.”

“Did you know Julian was lying to me?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he married me because of Meridian?”

“Yes.”

Elena looked back at him.

“Then never call yourself my friend again.”

Thomas lowered his head.

“I won’t.”

She expected excuses.

Instead, Thomas slid a folder across the table.

“What is this?”

“My confession.”

Elena stared at him.

“Everything I did.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re going to need someone inside the conspiracy to testify.”

Elena opened it.

Dates.

Meetings.

Payments.

Instructions.

Names.

Thomas had documented nearly a decade of Eleanor’s operations.

His own involvement was included.

“You understand this could put you in prison.”

“Yes.”

“Then why now?”

Thomas gave a tired smile.

“Because I spent my entire life being afraid of my mother.”

He looked at Elena.

“And then last night, I watched you stand in her dining room with every reason to be terrified.”

“You weren’t terrified.”

“You were done.”

That evening, Elena met federal investigators.

She gave them Julian’s recordings, Thomas’s statement, Charles’s journal, and the financial evidence.

But one problem remained.

The trust amendment required proof that Eleanor or Julian had intentionally defrauded Ashford Global.

Thomas’s testimony helped.

Julian’s recordings helped.

But Eleanor would argue both sons were lying to save themselves.

They needed evidence Eleanor could not explain away.

That evidence arrived at 11:18 p.m.

Marcus entered Elena’s temporary office carrying a sealed package.

“No return address.”

Inside was an old cassette tape.

A handwritten label read:

CHARLES - FINAL NIGHT.

Elena found a player.

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Charles Ashford’s voice emerged.

“Eleanor, put that glass down.”

A woman answered.

Eleanor.

“You’re being dramatic.”

Charles coughed.

“What did you put in it?”

The recording stopped.

May you like

Elena stared at the machine.

The remaining tape had been deliberately cut away.
