Chapter 4: Sirens in the Distance

The heavy silence that followed Marcus's revelation was broken only by the distant, high-pitched wail of approaching sirens. The sound cut through the tense, stagnant air of the foyer, growing louder and more urgent with every passing second. Chloe’s bravado had completely evaporated. She sat in a crumpled heap by the door, the red silk pooling around her, staring blankly at the white marble floor.
"It wasn't just me," Chloe muttered suddenly. Her eyes darted around the room, frantic, looking for a metaphorical way out since the physical ones were sealed. "You're a smart man, Marcus. Look at the logistics. Do you really think I could move thirty million dollars past your internal compliance team without triggering an audit?"
Marcus froze. His jaw tightened as the implication hit him. The Sterling Corporation’s internal security protocols were legendary in the financial sector.
"Who?" Marcus demanded, taking a step toward her. The icy calm was beginning to fracture, revealing a dangerous, simmering rage beneath.
"Protect me, and maybe I'll tell you," she sneered, attempting a desperate, eleventh-hour negotiation. "Get me a lawyer, secure me immunity, and I’ll give you the names on the board who orchestrated the entire thing."
"I don't make deals with criminals," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave. "Especially not ones who assault my family."
Through the frosted glass of the reinforced front doors, flashing red and blue lights painted the walls in erratic, strobe-like patterns. The heavy engines of an ambulance and two police cruisers idled in the driveway. The automated gates had opened just long enough to let emergency services through before locking down again.
"Open the doors, Marcus. This is your last chance," Chloe pleaded, real tears finally mixing with the fake ones she had shed earlier.
Marcus ignored her, pulling out his phone to disengage the magnetic seal on the front entrance. The heavy oak doors were pushed open forcefully from the outside, violently knocking Chloe aside as she failed to move in time. Two paramedics rushed in with a trauma kit, immediately locking eyes on Elena. Close behind them were three heavily armed police officers, their hands resting cautiously on their duty belts.
Marcus stood tall, raising a hand to signal the officers. He pointed a steady, unwavering finger straight at his wife, who was cowering on the floor.
"Officers, that woman assaulted my niece and is involved in a multi-million dollar corporate embezzlement scheme. The assault is on video, and the financial evidence is secured in my study." Marcus's voice was commanding, accustomed to giving orders that were immediately obeyed.
Two officers immediately moved toward Chloe, grabbing her by the arms and hauling her roughly to her feet. She winced in pain as weight was put on her injured ankle, instinctively putting her hands behind her back as the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly into place.

"You're making a mistake, Marcus!" she screamed as they read her her Miranda rights. "They'll destroy you without me!"
"Get her out of my house," Marcus ordered, turning his back on her as she was dragged out into the flashing lights of the night.
