Chapter 11: The Takedown

The violent breach of the CFO’s office shattered the insulated, quiet luxury of the Sterling Corporation's fiftieth floor. The heavy mahogany doors, reinforced for privacy, splintered under the force of the FBI tactical battering ram. The wood cracked with a sound like a gunshot, sending a shockwave through the adjacent secretarial pool.

Arthur Vance, the architect of a thirty-million-dollar empire of fraud, didn't fight back. The sight of six heavily armored federal agents leveling matte-black assault rifles at his chest drained whatever arrogant defiance he had left. He collapsed to his knees on the imported Persian rug, his hands instantly raised in the universal gesture of surrender.

"Hands behind your back! Do it now!" the lead tactical agent roared, his voice bouncing off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Arthur offered no resistance as rough hands yanked his arms backward. The metallic ratcheting of heavy-duty handcuffs clicking into place was the final, undeniable period on his long, treacherous career. As they hauled him to his feet, Arthur’s silver hair was disheveled, his bespoke Italian suit pulling awkwardly at the shoulders. He looked wildly around the room, his eyes finally landing on Marcus.

Marcus stood by the shattered doorway, entirely unbothered by the chaos unfolding around him. He reached under his lapel, his fingers finding the adhesive edge of the microscopic microphone. With a sharp pull, he removed the wire, tossing the tiny piece of state-of-the-art tech onto Arthur’s pristine, organized desk. It landed next to the crystal scotch decanter with a quiet clink.

"You're a fool, Marcus," Arthur spat, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and lingering narcissism as the agents began to march him toward the exit. "You think cutting me out saves the company? The board will panic. The stock will plummet. You just burned your own legacy to the ground over a few million dollars."

"It was never about the money, Arthur," Marcus replied, his voice deadpan, completely devoid of the fabricated panic from five minutes ago. "It was about the infection. And I'd rather rebuild my legacy from the ashes than let parasites like you feast on it in the dark."

Marcus stepped aside as the agents escorted Arthur out of the office. The fiftieth floor was in absolute pandemonium. Executives, analysts, and assistants stood paralyzed outside their glass-walled offices, watching in stunned silence as the untouchable Chief Financial Officer was marched past the elevators in handcuffs, flanked by federal agents.

Agent Harris walked out of the adjacent stairwell, securing his sidearm. He stopped next to Marcus, watching Arthur disappear into the secure freight elevator. "We have the warrant for his hard drives and the physical servers in the basement. Our forensic accounting teams will be tearing this building apart for the next forty-eight hours."

"Give them full access, Agent Harris. Every password, every encrypted file," Marcus instructed, straightening his tie. He looked out over the sea of shocked employees, ready to face the storm. "I have a press conference to prepare for."
