Chapter 2: The Flight Response

Realizing the charade had completely collapsed, the primal instinct of flight took over Chloe’s mind. The calculating manipulator vanished, leaving only a desperate criminal looking for an exit. She didn't lunge at Marcus; she knew she couldn't overpower him. Instead, she spun toward the heavy oak double doors he had left wide open in his rush to enter the house.
Adrenaline fueled her sprint, her arms pumping as she bolted for the sprawling, moonlit driveway. But the expensive, four-inch stilettos that had served as her weapon only moments ago now betrayed her. As she hit the transition from the smooth marble to the stone threshold of the entryway, her heel caught in the brass weather-stripping.
Chloe’s ankle twisted violently with a sharp, sickening pop. She let out a piercing shriek of pain and tumbled forward, her hands scraping against the rough exterior stone. The crimson dress tore at the knee. She lay sprawled half inside, half outside the mansion, gasping for air as a sharp, throbbing pain shot up her right leg.
Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't rush forward to offer a hand, nor did he express a single ounce of sympathy. He simply pocketed his phone and walked over to Elena, kneeling carefully beside his niece.
"Hold on, Elena. Paramedics are on the way. Don't try to move your torso," Marcus instructed, his voice shifting from the icy tone he used with Chloe to one of quiet, steady reassurance. He took off his tuxedo jacket, folding it neatly, and slipped it under Elena’s head to provide a makeshift pillow against the unforgiving marble.
Elena coughed, a wince of profound pain crossing her pale face. She tasted copper in her mouth. "The study, Marcus," she forced the words out, grabbing his wrist with surprising strength. "Check the wall safe in the study. Before she tries to contact someone else. There's a secondary network."
Chloe, pulling herself up by the heavy brass door handle, overheard the exchange. Her face twisted into a mask of pure venom. The polished society wife was gone. "You're dead, you little rat," she hissed, her voice dripping with hatred. "You have no idea what you've stepped into."
"I know exactly what I stepped into," Elena shot back, her voice shaking but defiant. "A decade-long fraud."

Before Chloe could attempt to hobble down the steps, a mechanical hum echoed across the property. The massive wrought-iron gates at the end of the long driveway began to slide shut, the heavy locking mechanisms clanking into place. Marcus had triggered the estate's total lockdown protocol directly from the security app.
"Automated lockdown engaged. Law enforcement en route," the house's AI voice chimed flawlessly through the hidden foyer speakers. Chloe was trapped inside her own gilded cage, cornered by the very technology she had tried to subvert.
