Chapter 10: The Trap is Sprung

The silence in the CFO’s office was absolute, heavy with the sudden, suffocating weight of Marcus's fabricated revelation. Arthur Vance stood frozen on the plush Persian rug, his polished facade cracking just enough to reveal the desperate panic beneath.

"She took the drive?" Arthur repeated, his voice dropping an octave, abandoning the warm, grandfatherly tone entirely. He walked quickly to his office doors, locking them with a sharp click, and pulled the blinds shut over the glass partitions.

Marcus watched him like a hawk, maintaining his panicked posture. "Yes. She called me from lockup. She said if I don't liquidate enough assets to secure her a private mercenary extraction before her transfer to federal prison, she'll give the FBI the master drive."

Arthur paced behind his desk, rubbing his temples furiously. "That stupid, arrogant woman. I told her the digital scrub wasn't enough. I told her we needed to destroy all physical backups."

In the van two blocks away, Agent Harris pumped his fist. Got him.

"I don't know what to do, Arthur," Marcus pleaded, leaning forward, ensuring the microphone picked up every syllable. "If the feds find that drive, they'll see the Cayman transfers. They'll see the thirty million. I’ll lose the company. I'll go to prison."

Arthur stopped pacing. He poured a generous glass of scotch from a crystal decanter, his hands shaking slightly. He drank it neat in one gulp. He turned to Marcus, his expression hardening into ruthless pragmatism.

"Listen to me, Marcus. You are going to do exactly as I say," Arthur ordered, stepping close, towering over Marcus's chair. "You will not talk to the police. You will not liquidate a single asset. The Cayman accounts are secure under Crimson Holdings. My signature isn't on any of those transfers; only hers is."

"But the drive..." Marcus stammered, playing his part to perfection. "The drive proves she was taking orders. It proves you orchestrated the shell companies."

"Let her try to prove it," Arthur sneered, his ego taking the wheel. "I spent two years building an untraceable network. I recruited her, I groomed her, and I used her to bypass your archaic compliance checks. If she tries to drag me down, my lawyers will bury her. We will claim she acted alone, a rogue wife stealing from her husband. The board will back me."

"The board knew?" Marcus asked, feigning shock.

"Only the ones who mattered," Arthur scoffed. "We were going to force you out next quarter anyway. Chloe was just the mechanism to bleed you dry first. Now, tell me exactly where she claims she hid that drive."

Marcus stood up slowly. The panicked, broken husband vanished. He straightened his tie, his posture shifting back to the commanding presence of the CEO. He looked Arthur dead in the eyes, his expression colder than absolute zero.

"She didn't hide it, Arthur," Marcus said, his voice echoing with terrible finality. "The FBI has it. They have the ledger. And they have this entire conversation."

Arthur staggered back, the color instantly draining from his face as he realized the fatal error he had just made. "You..."

"Bankruptcy," Marcus said clearly, speaking to his lapel.

Seconds later, the heavy mahogany doors of the office didn't just open; they were violently breached. The wood splintered as heavily armed FBI tactical agents flooded the room, their weapons raised.

"FBI! Hands where we can see them! Get down!" the lead agent roared.

Arthur Vance’s knees buckled. He dropped to the floor, his legacy, his freedom, and his stolen empire crumbling to dust in front of his eyes. Marcus didn't watch as they cuffed his former mentor. He turned on his heel and walked out of the office, the air suddenly feeling much lighter.
