Chapter 9: Sophia’s Last Promise

Lorenzo read the six words over and over.

If anything happens, trust Emily.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Sophia had a graceful script, each letter leaning slightly to the right. He had seen those same curves in birthday cards, grocery lists, and the love notes she slipped into his briefcase before business trips.

This wasn't forged.

It was hers.

Hunter stared at the photograph, her voice barely audible.

"My mother never told me she knew your wife."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"Maybe she couldn't."

Marco placed another folder on the conference table.

"We recovered this from Vivian's townhouse."

Inside was a flash drive hidden beneath a false bottom in a jewelry box.

The encrypted files took nearly an hour to unlock.

When the first video appeared, every person in the room fell silent.

The footage showed a small café in Brooklyn.

Sophia sat across from Emily Higgins.

Neither woman noticed the hidden camera across the street.

The recording had no audio.

But their expressions told a story.

Emily slid a thick envelope across the table.

Sophia opened it.

Within seconds, the color drained from her face.

She began shaking.

Then she looked up and grabbed Emily's hand.

The two women spoke rapidly.

Sophia nodded again and again before placing one hand over her pregnant belly.

Finally, Emily removed the silver lily locket from her own neck and placed it in Sophia's palm.

Sophia closed her fingers around it...

Then, after a long hesitation, returned it.

Hunter instinctively touched the identical locket around her neck.

"So my mother kept it..."

Marco nodded.

"Which means she believed it was safer with her."

Dr. Halloran entered the room carrying Leo's latest medical report.

"I thought you'd want some good news."

For the first time in weeks, he was smiling.

"Leo gained another six ounces."

The doctor looked at Hunter.

"His blood work is improving."

"No signs of organ failure."

"The poisoning is leaving his system."

Hunter closed her eyes in relief.

Leo reached up from her arms and wrapped his tiny hand around her finger.

Lorenzo watched the moment quietly.

He had spent millions trying to save his son.

Yet the child smiled only when Hunter spoke to him.

Late that evening, Marco rushed back into the room.

"We restored the deleted files from Vivian's computer."

He connected another video.

This one had audio.

Emily's voice filled the speakers.

"If they discover the truth before the baby is born, they'll kill all three of you."

Sophia answered through tears.

"I have to tell Lorenzo."

"No."

Emily leaned forward urgently.

"Someone inside your circle is feeding information to them."

"You don't know who you can trust."

Sophia whispered one heartbreaking question.

"If something happens to me..."

"...will you protect my son?"

Emily didn't hesitate.

"I swear."

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Hunter felt tears streaming down her face.

Her mother had made a promise twenty-six years ago.

A promise she never got the chance to keep.

Without realizing it, Hunter whispered,

"I'm keeping it now."

Lorenzo looked at her.

For the first time, he didn't see a maid.

He saw the daughter of a woman who had died trying to save his family.

Before anyone could say another word, every light in the mansion suddenly went dark.

The emergency alarms screamed.

Marco grabbed his radio.

"Boss!"

Voices shouted over the static.

"Perimeter breach!"

"Multiple vehicles!"

"They're coming through the east gate!"

Lorenzo drew his pistol.

"How many?"

The answer came through gunfire.

"...Too many."

Outside the mansion, a convoy of black SUVs crashed through the front gates.

Leading the attack—

Vivian Mercer stepped out wearing body armor.

She looked toward the third-floor nursery and smiled.

May you like

"This time..."

"...the child doesn't survive."
