Chapter 12: Sophia's Last Letter

Lorenzo stared at the sealed envelope as though it were made of glass.

His hands, steady through years of violence, trembled.

Sophia had written it only days before the explosion.

He carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a single folded letter.

The ink had faded slightly, but every word carried her warmth.

My dearest Lorenzo,

If you're reading this, then something happened that Emily feared.

Please don't blame yourself.

Loving you was never my mistake.

But there are people much closer to us than you realize.

Emily discovered someone inside the family has been working with men who want our son dead.

I wanted to tell you everything, but she begged me to wait until she had proof.

If I don't survive...

Promise me one thing.

Don't let revenge raise Leo.

Let love do what violence never could.

And if a woman named Hunter Higgins ever enters your life...

Trust her.

Her mother gave everything to protect our son.

Now I believe her daughter will too.

I will love you forever.

Sophia

The room was silent.

Hunter covered her mouth.

She had never met Sophia.

Yet the woman had somehow known her name before Leo was even born.

Lorenzo slowly folded the letter.

For months, he had believed revenge honored Sophia's memory.

Now he realized she had wanted something entirely different.

She had wanted Leo to grow up free from hatred.

Marco entered quietly.

"We've located Adrian."

"Where?"

"He fled to the old Rossi vineyard in upstate New York."

Lorenzo slipped Sophia's letter into his jacket.

"He doesn't leave alive."

Hunter stepped in front of him.

"Lorenzo."

He stopped.

"If you go there looking only for revenge..."

"...Leo loses both of his parents."

Those words struck him harder than any weapon.

Hunter continued softly.

"Bring him to justice."

"Let Leo grow up knowing his father chose him over vengeance."

For a long moment, Lorenzo said nothing.

Then he looked at his sleeping son.

"I made Sophia one promise too late."

He holstered his pistol.

"I'm not breaking this one."

That evening, dozens of federal agents surrounded the abandoned vineyard.

Adrian Rossi emerged with his hands raised.

He smiled when he saw Lorenzo.

"I wondered how long it would take."

"You murdered Sophia," Lorenzo said.

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

"I wanted the baby."

"Sophia died because she refused to step away from the car."

Lorenzo's fists clenched.

"Why Leo?"

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"Because he inherited everything."

"The empire."

"The fortune."

"The name."

"As long as he lived... I would always be second."

The confession echoed across the vineyard.

Hidden microphones recorded every word.

Federal agents stepped forward.

Adrian's smile disappeared.

He looked at Lorenzo one last time.

"You've become weak."

Lorenzo glanced at the photo of Leo in his wallet.

"No."

"I've finally become a father."

The agents placed Adrian in handcuffs.

As he was led away, Lorenzo felt something he hadn't experienced since before the explosion.

Peace.

May you like

For the first time, revenge had not won.

Justice had.
