Chapter 4: The Secret Sophia Never Knew

Dawn broke over the Atlantic, painting the cliffs outside the Rossi estate in pale shades of gold. Inside the nursery, no one had slept.

Leo woke twice during the night.

Both times, he refused every bottle placed near his lips.

Both times, the crying stopped only when Hunter held him.

Dr. Halloran watched in astonishment as the tiny boy fed peacefully for a second time.

When Leo finished, he remained asleep in Hunter's arms without vomiting once.

The doctor slowly removed his glasses.

"I've never seen a turnaround this fast."

Lorenzo stood by the window, his eyes fixed on the ocean.

"Explain it."

"It's more than nutrition," Halloran replied. "Premature infants sometimes recognize warmth, scent, and heartbeat better than they recognize food. After losing his mother before birth, Leo may have associated every feeding with stress and pain."

He glanced toward Hunter.

"She isn't replacing his mother."

"She's giving him something his nervous system has been searching for."

"Safety."

Lorenzo lowered his head.

The word hit harder than any bullet.

Safety.

He had built walls twenty feet high.

Filled the estate with armed guards.

Installed cameras in every hallway.

Yet he had forgotten the one thing his son could never buy.

Comfort.

Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore waited outside the nursery.

When Lorenzo stepped into the hallway, she spoke quietly.

"May I tell you something about Emily Higgins?"

Lorenzo nodded.

"She worked here for almost five years."

"I don't remember her."

"You were away at boarding school in Switzerland."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Emily wasn't just another maid."

"She became like a daughter to your mother."

Lorenzo frowned.

"My mother never mentioned her."

"She couldn't."

"Why?"

Eleanor hesitated.

"Because Emily left suddenly."

"She was pregnant."

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

"Do you know who the father was?"

Eleanor slowly shook her head.

"No."

"She never told anyone."

"She only said she wanted her baby to grow up far away from violence."

Lorenzo looked back through the nursery window.

Hunter gently rocked Leo while humming a lullaby no one else recognized.

A lullaby.

His chest tightened.

Sophia used to hum that exact melody whenever she decorated the nursery before Leo was born.

He had asked her once where she'd learned it.

She'd smiled and answered,

"My grandmother sang it to every child in our family."

Lorenzo stared at Hunter.

The melody was identical.

Every note.

Every pause.

He walked back into the room.

"Where did you learn that song?"

Hunter looked surprised.

"My mother used to sing it."

"Every night."

"It was the only lullaby she knew."

Lorenzo felt a chill crawl down his spine.

That song wasn't common.

Sophia had once told him only a handful of families still remembered it.

Before he could ask another question, one of the guards burst into the nursery.

"Boss!"

Everyone turned.

The guard held a tablet connected to the estate's surveillance system.

His face had gone pale.

"We reviewed the security footage from last night."

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

"And?"

"The cameras didn't just record Miss Higgins entering the nursery."

He swallowed.

"They also recorded someone else."

"Someone who entered an hour earlier."

The room froze.

"Who?"

The guard tapped the screen.

A video appeared.

A man dressed as a hospital technician quietly walked into Leo's nursery carrying a medical cooler.

He stayed for less than two minutes.

Then disappeared before anyone noticed.

Lorenzo stared at the man's face.

He had never seen him before.

But what happened next made every person in the room stop breathing.

The technician reached into Leo's IV line...

Injected something...

Then calmly walked away.

Dr. Halloran grabbed the tablet.

"My God..."

He looked up at Lorenzo.

"Mr. Rossi..."

May you like

"I don't think your son's illness was ever natural."

"It may have been attempted murder."
