Chapter 14: The Choice That Changed Everything

One year later, the Rossi estate looked nothing like the place Hunter had first entered with a bucket and a rag.

The silence was gone.

Children's laughter drifted through the gardens where armed guards once stood motionless. The marble halls still reflected wealth, but now they also reflected life.

Leo had just celebrated his first birthday.

He had taken his first steps the week before.

His first word hadn't been "Dad."

It hadn't even been "Mama."

It was simply...

"Hunt."

The nickname made everyone laugh—except Hunter.

She cried.

The Sophia Rossi Foundation had become one of New York's leading charities for premature infants and grieving families.

Every month, mothers walked through its doors believing they had nowhere left to turn.

Every month, they left knowing they weren't alone.

Hunter insisted on greeting each family herself.

"I know what it feels like," she often told them.

"You don't have to carry it by yourself anymore."

One quiet evening, Lorenzo found Hunter sitting on the nursery balcony, watching Leo chase butterflies across the lawn with Mrs. Whitmore nearby.

"He looks happy," Hunter said.

"He is."

Lorenzo sat beside her.

"So are you."

He looked out at the horizon before speaking again.

"For months after Sophia died, I thought keeping Leo alive was enough."

"It wasn't."

Hunter remained silent.

"I forgot that children don't just need protection."

"They need joy."

"They need kindness."

"They need someone who teaches them how to love."

He turned toward her.

"You gave him all of that."

Hunter's eyes glistened.

"I only loved him."

"I know."

Lorenzo reached into his jacket.

"I have one more thing."

He handed her a small envelope.

Inside was a single legal document.

It named Hunter Higgins as Leo Rossi's permanent legal guardian should anything ever happen to Lorenzo.

Hunter stared at the page.

"You trust me with your son?"

Lorenzo smiled.

"I trust you with my entire world."

Tears rolled down Hunter's cheeks.

"I never thought I'd be someone's mother again."

Lorenzo looked toward the garden where Leo had fallen onto the grass laughing.

"You already are."

That night, Hunter stood alone in the nursery after putting Leo to bed.

She opened the drawer beside his crib.

Inside rested two objects.

Sophia's photograph.

And Lily's tiny pink knitted bootie.

She placed them side by side.

One represented the woman who gave Leo life.

The other represented the little girl who had changed Hunter forever.

Neither child would ever be forgotten.

Hunter gently kissed Leo's forehead.

"Your mother was brave," she whispered.

"And because of her..."

"...all of us found our way home."

Outside the nursery, Lorenzo quietly heard every word.

He didn't interrupt.

Some moments were too sacred to disturb.

Tomorrow, he had one final surprise waiting.

One that would complete the promise Sophia had asked him to keep.
