Chapter 5 - THE VOICE IN COURT

The courtroom listened to the pendant recording.

Victoria’s voice came first.

“Michael, step away from me.”

Serena answered.

“Security is down for nine minutes.”

Michael said:

“Sign the transfer.”

Victoria refused.

A struggle followed.

Glass shattered.

Mia screamed.

Then Michael’s voice became clear.

“If you tell anyone, your grandfather will find both of you at the bottom of the lake.”

Patricia Cross lowered her head.

The judge stopped the recording.

Michael’s attorney objected to authentication.

Gabriel’s technical director testified through video.

The pendant used military-grade encryption.

The audio had uploaded in real time to three independent servers.

It could not have been altered after the event.

The judge denied Michael’s custody petition.

He suspended all parental contact.

Gabriel received temporary guardianship while Victoria remained hospitalized.

Patricia stood.

“This is outrageous.”

“The Stone family has been waiting to steal Mia from my son.”

The judge looked at her.

“Your son threatened to kill the child.”

“He was under pressure.”

“That is not a defense.”

Patricia turned toward Mia.

“Your father loves you.”

Mia’s voice was small but steady.

“Love doesn’t carry a fire poker.”

The courtroom went silent.

Outside, reporters gathered around Gabriel.

He refused to discuss Mia.

He gave one statement.

“My daughter is alive.”

“My granddaughter is safe.”

“Everything else will be answered through evidence.”

At the hospital, Dr. Aaron Blake reported that Victoria’s brain swelling had stabilized.

She was still in critical condition.

Elena remained close to Mia.

She knew which foods Mia ate when frightened.

She knew the bedtime story Victoria used.

She knew Mia could not sleep if the closet door remained open.

Gabriel watched them together.

“You protected both of them.”

Elena shook her head.

“Not enough.”

“You stood between Michael and Mia.”

“I froze when he threw Mrs. Cross.”

“Fear is not failure.”

“Staying after fear takes over is courage.”

Elena looked away.

She had not been treated as courageous inside the mansion.

Michael called her furniture.

Serena called her replaceable.

Victoria called her by name.

That difference was why Elena had stayed.

Then Detective Morales received the first complete download from the blue room.

One video showed Michael meeting with a man Gabriel recognized.

May you like

Harold Stone.

Gabriel’s younger brother.
