The blue room was not listed on the mansion plans.
Gabriel had owned the estate before giving it to Victoria as a wedding gift.
He knew every legal addition.
Michael had renovated the west wing two years earlier.
He claimed the work created a wine cellar and a private gym.
Detective Morales obtained an emergency search warrant.
Gabriel returned to the mansion with investigators before sunrise.
The ballroom remained decorated for Michael’s foundation gala.
Champagne stood untouched on silver trays.
Guests had been ordered to remain in the dining hall until police collected statements.
Nearly two hundred wealthy witnesses had heard the crash.
Only three claimed to have seen anything.
Michael had trained people to confuse comfort with blindness.
Elena led investigators through the west corridor.
A blue silk wall panel covered the final section.
Behind it was a steel door with a biometric lock.
Victoria’s fingerprint opened it.
Gabriel used a copy stored in her emergency file.
The room beyond contained no wine.
It contained documents.
Photographs.
Medical records.
Copies of Victoria’s signatures.
Life-insurance policies.
Michael had taken out a fifty-million-dollar policy on her eighteen months earlier.
The beneficiary was a trust controlled by Serena.
A second file concerned Mia.
It contained a completed petition declaring Victoria psychologically unstable.
Michael claimed his wife suffered violent episodes and endangered their daughter.
Attached photographs showed bruises on Michael’s arms.
Elena looked at them.
“He made those himself.”
“I saw him strike his arm against the doorframe.”
Detective Morales opened another folder.
Inside was a draft obituary.
VICTORIA CROSS, PHILANTHROPIST AND DEVOTED MOTHER, DIES IN TRAGIC FALL.
The date was blank.
The rest had already been written.
Gabriel found a black ledger inside the desk.
Payments went to a private physician, a family-court evaluator, the estate security chief, and a funeral director near Lake Geneva.
Michael had not lost control in the foyer.
He had followed a plan.
The glass cabinet was only one possible ending.
The lake was another.
Then an alarm sounded inside the room.
A red message appeared on the computer screen.
REMOTE ERASE INITIATED.
Serena had discovered the room was open.
The files began disappearing.
Gabriel pulled a small drive from his pocket.
“My daughter taught me never to trust one copy.”
He connected it to the system.
The hidden server began transferring everything to Stone Protective Services.
Thirty seconds later, the screen went black.
