Chapter 1 - THE MAN AT THE GATES

Mia wiped the tears from her face and stared directly at Michael.

“You should run.”

Michael tightened his grip on the iron poker.

“What did you say?”

“My grandpa is here.”

The color vanished from Michael’s face.

For the first time that night, he looked toward the front windows.

White headlights swept across the foyer walls.

Beyond the glass doors, three black vehicles moved through the estate gates.

Michael had personally ordered those gates locked.

He had disabled the intercom.

He had taken every employee’s phone.

Yet the vehicles came forward without slowing.

The first SUV stopped beneath the portico.

A tall man stepped out into the rain.

Gabriel Stone wore a dark overcoat over a charcoal suit.

His silver hair was wet within seconds.

Two state police detectives followed him.

Behind them came four members of Stone Protective Services, the security company Gabriel had founded after leaving the Army.

Michael took one step backward.

Mia pointed toward him.

“I pressed the star.”

A small silver pendant hung around her neck.

Michael had always believed it was a cheap gift from an overprotective grandfather.

It was an emergency transmitter.

The moment Mia pressed the center star, it sent audio, location data, and a silent distress alert to Gabriel’s private command center.

The front doors opened.

Michael raised the poker.

Gabriel entered without rushing.

His eyes moved first to Mia.

Then to Victoria lying among the broken glass.

Then to Elena standing against the wall with blood on her hands from trying to stop Victoria’s wounds.

Finally, Gabriel looked at Michael.

“Put it down.”

Michael attempted to smile.

“Gabriel, this is a misunderstanding.”

Gabriel removed his coat and handed it to a detective.

“My daughter is unconscious.”

“My granddaughter is terrified.”

“You are holding a weapon.”

“There is nothing here to misunderstand.”

Michael stepped toward Mia.

Gabriel moved once.

He caught Michael’s wrist, twisted the poker free, and drove him against the marble column.

The detectives closed handcuffs around Michael’s wrists.

He shouted that Victoria had attacked him.

He claimed the cabinet broke accidentally.

He said Elena was lying.

Mia ran toward Gabriel.

He lifted her and covered her face against his shoulder.

“Do not look at him.”

Paramedics entered behind the security team.

Elena dropped beside Victoria.

“She was breathing a minute ago.”

One paramedic searched for a pulse.

Another called for a trauma stretcher.

Then the lead medic looked up.

“We need to move now.”

Gabriel’s expression did not change.

But his hand tightened against Mia’s back.

Michael laughed from beside the column.

“If she dies, everything becomes mine.”

Gabriel turned toward him.

May you like

“No.”

“If she dies, everything becomes evidence.”
