Chapter 14 - MICHAEL’S VERDICT
The jury deliberated for nine hours.
Michael was convicted of attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy, coercive control, financial fraud, child endangerment, and participation in Caroline’s unlawful confinement.
A separate jury later convicted him of helping conceal Caroline’s murder.
He received life imprisonment without parole.
Harold received multiple life sentences.
Serena received forty-six years.
Patricia received twenty-four after cooperation.
Colin received thirty-one.
The physician, evaluator, security contractors, and attorney who accepted payments faced separate convictions.
The estate gala guests were not charged for failing to intervene before the crash.
Several lost positions after investigations revealed they lied to police.
Silence was not always criminal.
It still had consequences.
At sentencing, Michael asked to speak.
He looked at Mia through the courtroom monitor.
“I love my daughter.”
The judge stopped him.
“You threatened to kill her.”
Michael insisted he was angry.
The judge answered:
“Anger is an emotion.”
“You constructed a mine room, forged custody papers, arranged passports, disabled security, and prepared an obituary.”
“That is planning.”
Michael turned toward Victoria.
“You turned Mia against me.”
Victoria remained calm.
“No.”
“You taught her to fear you.”
“I taught her that fear should be spoken.”
After the sentence, Mia asked whether Michael would ever come home.
Victoria answered honestly.
“No.”
Mia cried.
Children can miss dangerous parents.
Missing someone does not make contact safe.
Victoria held her without correcting the feeling.
Gabriel waited nearby.
He had spent his life defeating threats through force.
