Chapter 8 – The Verdict That Changed More Than One Life
Closing arguments ended just before noon.
The jury deliberated for nearly six hours.
No one in the courtroom spoke while they waited.
Emily sat beside Lily, quietly reading a children's book to keep her occupied.
Richard remained alone on the opposite side of the room.
He hadn't spoken to Victoria since the first day of the trial.
Finally, the courtroom deputy announced,
"The jury has reached a verdict."
Everyone stood.
Victoria gripped the defense table so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
The foreperson unfolded the verdict form.
"On the charge of wire fraud..."
A pause.
"We find the defendant guilty."
Victoria lowered her head.
"On the charge of embezzlement..."
"Guilty."
"On the charge of conspiracy to misuse charitable funds..."
"Guilty."
Each word echoed through the courtroom like a bell.
Some victims quietly cried.
Others simply closed their eyes in relief.
The judge thanked the jury before turning to Victoria.
"You stole from children who would never know your name."
His voice was calm but unwavering.
"You abused public trust for personal luxury. That betrayal cannot be measured only in dollars."
He imposed a lengthy prison sentence, substantial financial penalties, and permanent restrictions preventing Victoria from serving as an officer or director of any charitable organization.
Victoria looked toward Richard one last time.
"I loved you."
Richard answered with quiet honesty.
"I believe you did."
She almost smiled.
"But somewhere along the way..."
He glanced toward Emily and Lily.
"...you loved power more."
Court officers escorted Victoria away.
She never looked back again.
Outside the courthouse, reporters rushed toward Emily.
She stopped only long enough to answer one question.
"What do you hope people remember from this case?"
Emily looked down at Lily before replying.
"I hope they remember that character is revealed by how we treat people who have nothing to offer us."
Then she took her daughter's hand.
