Chapter 4 – The Documents No One Expected

The woman in the dark suit walked confidently across the marble floor, her heels echoing through the silent ballroom.
She stopped beside Emily and handed her the leather portfolio.
“Everything has been verified,” she said. “Three years of financial records, internal emails, and witness statements.”
Victoria frowned.
“What is this?”
Emily didn't answer immediately. Instead, she thanked the attorney with a nod before opening the portfolio.
Richard's expression tightened.
“You hired an investigator?”
“I hired an auditor,” Emily corrected. “There’s a difference.”
A murmur spread through the crowd.
The Ashford Charity Foundation had raised millions every year for children, hospitals, and homeless shelters. It was considered the city's crown jewel of philanthropy.
Emily looked directly at Richard.
“When I agreed to become the anonymous primary donor, I made one condition.”
Richard nodded slowly.
“Complete financial transparency.”
“Exactly.”
She pulled out several reports.
“For the last six months, my team has quietly reviewed every grant, every expense, and every executive reimbursement.”
Victoria laughed nervously.
“You're trying to embarrass me because of a misunderstanding involving your daughter.”
Emily calmly slid one document across the nearest table.
“This isn't about my daughter anymore.”
Judge Whitmore adjusted his glasses.
“What does it show?”
The attorney answered.
“Luxury vacations billed as charity conferences.”
Another page.
“Designer jewelry purchased through administrative accounts.”
Another.
“Over one point eight million dollars transferred to shell companies controlled by board members.”
Gasps filled the room.
Richard grabbed the documents and scanned them himself.
His hands began to shake.
“No...”
Emily's voice remained calm.
“I hoped we were wrong.”
Victoria stepped backward.
“You forged those.”
The attorney smiled faintly.
“They were obtained directly from the foundation's accounting system.”
Richard slowly looked at his wife.
“Tell me they’re fake.”
Victoria opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For the first time in decades, the woman who always had an answer found herself completely speechless.
Emily closed the portfolio.
“My daughter exposed your character.”
She paused.
“The audit simply exposed everything else.”
Outside, distant police sirens began growing louder.
Victoria heard them.

And for the first time that evening...
She realized they were coming for her.
