Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind Emily Parker

No one spoke.

Even the orchestra members remained frozen, their instruments still resting in their hands.

Victoria forced herself to smile.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

The event coordinator swallowed hard.

"There isn't."

He turned toward the audience.

"Ladies and gentlemen... this is Mrs. Emily Parker."

The whispers became louder.

"The Emily Parker?"

"I thought she lived overseas."

"I heard she'd never attend public events."

"My God..."

Emily ignored them.

She knelt beside Lily.

"Can you stand, sweetheart?"

Lily nodded.

Emily kissed her forehead.

"You were very brave."

The child whispered, "She said I was dirty."

Emily's heart tightened.

Victoria quickly interrupted.

"Children exaggerate."

Several guests who had witnessed everything lowered their eyes.

No one denied Lily's words.

No one defended Victoria either.

Emily stood again.

"My daughter has never lied to me."

Victoria folded her arms.

"You expect everyone to believe the word of a crying child?"

Before Emily could answer, a clear voice came from the back of the ballroom.

"I heard every single word."

Heads turned.

An elderly man slowly walked forward using a polished wooden cane.

Judge Harold Whitmore.

Retired Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court.

One of the most respected men in the room.

He stopped beside Emily.

"The little girl greeted everyone politely."

He looked directly at Victoria.

"You called her 'street trash.'"

Another silence.

Then another voice.

"I heard it too."

Then another.

"And I saw her grab the child."

"I was standing beside the piano."

"I saw everything."

The silence that had protected Victoria only moments earlier began to crumble.

Emily looked around the room.

"So..."

She spoke without anger.

"Many of you witnessed this."

No one answered.

"You watched an adult drag a six-year-old child across the ballroom."

Still no response.

"You watched my daughter cry."

A businessman slowly lowered his head.

Emily's disappointment was sharper than any scream.

"The wealth in this room is extraordinary."

She paused.

"But tonight I discovered how poor courage can be."

Several guests looked ashamed.

Victoria clenched her jaw.

"This is becoming unnecessarily dramatic."

Emily reached into her purse once more.

This time she removed her phone.

"I agree."

She touched the screen.

"So let's remove all doubt."

A large television above the ballroom stage suddenly came to life.

The security footage had already begun to play.
