Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO CAME FOR THE SONG

Lily’s class began singing at seven.
The children wore paper stars around their necks.
Lily stood in the second row.
She searched the audience until she found Adrian.
Then she smiled.
Halfway through the song, the emergency doors opened.
A man in a maintenance jacket entered backstage.
Agent Quinn saw him on the monitor.
The badge belonged to a worker who had called in sick.
Agents moved toward the corridor.
The man dropped the toolbox and ran.
Inside it were smoke canisters and a compact transmitter.
Volkov had discovered the new venue.
Someone inside the school had leaked it.
Quinn ordered a silent evacuation after the first song.
Teachers guided children through the rear hall.
No alarms.
No panic.
Adrian remained seated while Lily left with Sarah.
His instinct told him to follow.
Quinn stopped him.
“Volkov wants movement.”
“You are the target.”
The theater lights went out.
Smoke rolled across the stage.
A recorded gunshot exploded through the speakers.
Adrian’s pulse surged.
The device beneath his chest monitored every beat.
It remained operational.
The emergency lights turned on.
A figure appeared in the balcony.
Dimitri Volkov.
He held no weapon openly.
He did not need one.
His men occupied two exits.
Federal agents surrounded the lower floor.
Volkov smiled.
“You brought police into a room full of children.”
“The children are gone,” Quinn said.
Volkov’s expression changed.
He had expected terror.
He found an empty stage.
Adrian stood.
“This ends tonight.”
Volkov looked toward him.
“You found courage after becoming a father?”
“No.”
“I found limits.”
“You never had them before.”
Volkov raised a phone.
A live video appeared on the theater screen.
Sarah and Lily stood inside a service tunnel.
A school employee held a knife near Sarah’s back.
The leak was Lily’s daycare teacher, Miss Collins.
Volkov had paid her brother’s medical bills.
Then he used the debt to control her.
“Send Quinn’s agents away,” Volkov said.
“Or your daughter watches her mother die.”
Adrian’s heart accelerated again.
The device corrected the rhythm.
Quinn whispered.
“We have officers in the tunnel.”
Volkov knew.
“If they enter, Collins cuts her.”
Adrian looked at the screen.
Sarah’s eyes met the hidden camera.
She did not beg.
She moved one hand toward Lily.
Their daughter stared at the knife.
Then she looked at Miss Collins.
“You taught us to tell a grown-up when someone has a weapon.”
Collins began crying.
“I am sorry.”
“Then put it down.”
The child’s voice carried through the tunnel.
Collins’s hand shook.
Sarah moved between the knife and Lily.
“You can stop,” Sarah said.
“Volkov will hurt my brother.”
“Quinn can protect him.”
“You do not know that.”
“No.”
“But hurting a child will not save him.”
Collins released the knife.
Agents entered.
Volkov stared at the screen as his leverage disappeared.
Quinn’s officers moved toward the balcony.
Volkov raised a gun from beneath his coat.
He aimed at Adrian.
Vincent struck him from the side.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Both men fell against the railing.
Adrian’s device delivered a shock.
Pain exploded through his chest.

He collapsed between the seats.
The last sound he heard was Lily calling him Daddy from the service-hall doorway.
