Chapter 10 - THE CONFESSION OF ADRIAN MORETTI
Adrian entered a cooperation agreement with federal prosecutors.
He surrendered financial records, safe-house locations, weapons accounts, and evidence connected to Volkov.
He also surrendered evidence against himself.
Extortion.
Illegal gambling.
Bribery.
Assault orders.
Business coercion.
He did not claim ignorance because lieutenants carried out the details.
The authority had been his.
Vincent cooperated too.
Nicholas accepted a plea agreement after revealing Volkov’s remaining network.
He did not ask Vincent for forgiveness.
He asked only whether their mother would know the truth.
“She should,” Vincent said.
“Even if she hates me?”
“Especially then.”
Adrian’s legitimate restaurants and real-estate companies entered an employee ownership trust.
No Moretti relative would inherit automatic control.
Profits funded legal defense for uninvolved workers and restitution for victims.
Sarah refused any personal share.
Lily received a separate education trust funded only from Adrian’s verified legitimate income.
Sarah and an independent trustee controlled it.
Adrian held no withdrawal authority.
The press conference occurred outside federal court.
Adrian wore no expensive tie.
No armed men stood behind him.
He read a short statement.
“I spent years describing violence as protection.”
“I used fear to control businesses and people.”
“I stayed away from my daughter because I believed my enemies made fatherhood impossible.”
“The truth is that the life I chose made safety impossible.”
“I will plead guilty.”
“I will cooperate.”
“This is not sacrifice.”
“It is consequence.”
Reporters shouted questions.
One asked whether a child had reformed the most feared man in New York.
Adrian looked directly into the cameras.
“My daughter is not responsible for reforming me.”
“She asked to hold my hand.”
“What I chose after that belongs to me.”
Sarah watched from a private room with Lily.
“Is Daddy famous?” Lily asked.
“Yes.”
“For good things?”
“For many things.”
“Are the bad things real?”
“Yes.”
“Does he still love me?”
“Yes.”
“Can both happen?”
Sarah looked at the screen.
“Yes.”
“Love does not automatically make someone safe.”
“Choices help decide safety.”
Lily considered that.
“Is he making safe choices?”
“He is beginning to.”
Adrian pleaded guilty the following week.
The judge allowed him to remain under medical supervision until sentencing.
He spent those months seeing Lily twice a week.
Every visit occurred with Sarah’s agreement.
They visited parks.
Libraries.
A small diner where no one knew his name.
Adrian learned that Lily disliked peas, loved dinosaurs, and became furious when adults skipped pages in books.
He learned not to arrive with expensive gifts.
