Chapter 5 - SARAH’S CONDITIONS

Sarah moved Lily into a federal witness-protection residence.
She contacted Special Agent Mara Quinn, who had investigated Volkov’s port operations for years.
Quinn wanted Adrian’s evidence.
Sarah wanted protection beyond Moretti control.
Their needs aligned.
Adrian objected from the hospital.
He did not object because he distrusted Quinn.
He objected because federal protection placed Lily inside a system he could not command.
Sarah recognized the difference.
“That is why it may work.”
Adrian remained silent.
She continued.
“If you want a place in Lily’s life, you accept that you are not the only person capable of protecting her.”
“I know.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Then act like it.”
Adrian asked what she required.
Sarah gave him five conditions.
He would cooperate with federal investigators regarding Volkov and Nicholas.
He would transfer his legitimate businesses into independent management.
He would create no legal authority over Lily without Sarah’s consent.
He would attend medical treatment and therapy.
And he would never ask Lily to keep secrets from her mother.
Adrian accepted the first four immediately.
The fifth made him look away.
Sarah noticed.
“What secret were you planning?”
“None.”
“What secret have you already kept?”
Adrian reached into his hospital bag.
He removed a small stuffed bear.
Mr. Buttons.
An identical replacement for Lily’s worn toy.
“I bought this three years ago.”
Sarah stared at it.
“How did you know about her bear?”
“I received reports.”
“What kind of reports?”
“Photographs.”
“School notes.”
“Medical updates.”
Her face changed.
“You had people watching us.”
“To make sure you were safe.”
“You watched our daughter take her first steps through surveillance photographs.”
“I know how that sounds.”
“It sounds like you wanted access without accountability.”
Adrian had no defense.
Sarah placed the bear back inside the bag.
“You do not give this to her.”
“I understand.”
“No.”
“You tell her one day that you watched from a distance because you were afraid.”
“You let her decide what that means.”
“I will.”
Sarah sat near the window.
“You say you loved her every day.”
“I believe you.”
“That does not make what you did healthy.”
“I know.”
“Stop using love as proof that your decisions were right.”
The sentence stayed with him.
Sarah looked toward his monitor.
“Why did your father die?”
“The same heart condition.”
“Did he know?”
“No.”
“Do your enemies know about yours?”
“Volkov probably does now.”
“How?”
“The hospital leak.”
“Nicholas?”
“Possibly.”
Sarah stood.
“Then this is larger than a kidnapping threat.”
“They may be planning to trigger your heart.”
Adrian remembered the shooting.
The bullet had struck his shoulder rather than his chest.
The gunfire forced his heart rate high enough to reveal the disease.
Perhaps the attack had never been designed to kill him through blood loss.
Perhaps Volkov wanted doctors to discover a weakness that Nicholas could exploit later.
The hospital shooting had been reconnaissance.
Adrian called Quinn.
“I want a formal cooperation meeting.”
Sarah watched him.
“Is that because I asked?”
May you like
“No.”
“It is because you made me admit what I already knew.”
