Chapter 7 - THE DOCTOR WHO CONTROLLED THE DEVICE

Dr. Elena Maren had diagnosed Adrian.

She had urged surgery.

She appeared to have saved his life.

Nicholas claimed she was Volkov’s insider.

Adrian rejected the accusation.

“Elena treated my father.”

“That makes her more dangerous,” Quinn said.

“Or more trustworthy.”

“Trust is not evidence.”

The words came from Sarah.

Adrian looked at her.

She had learned that lesson through him.

Quinn obtained a warrant for Dr. Maren’s communication records.

They showed no contact with Volkov.

They did show someone accessing her medical credentials from another terminal.

The hospital’s deputy technology director, Samuel Pike, had entered Adrian’s file.

Pike’s wife owed money to a Volkov-controlled gambling operation.

Volkov used the debt.

Pike copied the device information and provided it to Nicholas.

Dr. Maren was innocent.

She was also furious.

“You placed a connected defibrillator inside a man whose enemies own hackers?” Adrian asked.

“The connection allows doctors to detect dangerous rhythms.”

“Can it be disabled?”

“Yes.”

“You lose remote monitoring.”

“I gain control.”

Dr. Maren shook her head.

“You are treating medicine like security territory.”

“Because someone turned it into one.”

She performed the change herself.

The device would operate internally without remote commands.

Volkov’s heart attack plan collapsed.

The concert remained dangerous.

Sarah wanted Lily removed.

Lily overheard.

“I practiced my song.”

Sarah knelt.

“There may be unsafe people at the concert.”

“Because of Daddy?”

Adrian stood in the doorway.

He had been released from the hospital that morning.

Lily looked at him.

“Are you coming?”

Adrian did not want to lie.

“I was planning to.”

“Mom says bad people might come too.”

“Yes.”

“Then don’t come.”

The answer surprised him.

Lily touched his coat.

“I can sing again another day.”

Adrian looked toward Sarah.

Their daughter understood sacrifice too quickly.

He did not want her to organize childhood around his danger.

“The concert will be moved,” Quinn said.

“We will control the new location.”

“Volkov will not know.”

Sarah frowned.

“How do you move an entire school concert?”

Adrian answered.

“You offer the school a better hall.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“No bribes.”

“A donation with no conditions.”

“No Moretti name on the building.”

“Agreed.”

The concert moved to a community theater under federal control.

Volkov’s team still appeared at the original hall.

Agents arrested three men carrying weapons and audio equipment.

The children performed safely across town.

Adrian sat in the last row.

No entourage.

No public announcement.

Lily found him before stepping onto the stage.

She ran toward him.

Then she stopped herself.

“Can I hug you?”

Adrian lowered himself carefully.

“Yes.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

His device remained silent.

His heart raced for a reason no doctor could reduce with medication.

Lily whispered.

“After the song, will you still be here?”

“Yes.”

She pulled back.

“How long?”

Adrian answered honestly.

“Until your mom says it is time to go.”

May you like

Sarah heard.

For the first time, she believed he might learn that staying did not mean taking control.
