Chapter 6 - The Judge Who Signed Before Hearing Us
Rebecca Sloan, our family attorney, filed an emergency challenge to Judge Pierce.
The court reassigned the guardianship hearing after reviewing the payment records.
Pierce denied wrongdoing.
Then investigators recovered messages between him and Margaret.
One was dated two weeks before Leo’s birth.
When the mother destabilizes, I will need the medical report and the father’s absence documented.
The plan began before Elena came home from the hospital.
Margaret had never intended to help us.
She moved into our house to manufacture a crisis.
A different judge issued temporary protection orders for Elena and Leo.
Margaret was prohibited from contacting them.
That order did not make her harmless.
The police reached the lake house shortly after dawn.
It was empty.
The fireplaces remained warm.
Two suitcases stood near the rear door.
A nursery had been prepared upstairs.
The closet held clothes for Leo through his second birthday.
Margaret had planned a long absence.
Detective Brooks found shredded documents inside the kitchen stove.
One fragment carried my signature.
Another mentioned a competency evaluation.
The basement held shelves of infant formula, bottled water, and medical supplies.
Elena looked at the photographs from her hospital bed.
“She built another home for him.”
“She believed she would win,” I said.
“No.”
“She believed the court order was only decoration.”
“She already thought he belonged to her.”
Police recovered a laptop from the lake.
A security officer had thrown it from the dock when agents arrived.
The hard drive survived.
It contained emails showing Margaret pressured the pediatric clinic to report Elena for missed appointments.
Margaret herself had canceled them.
She then instructed staff to document “maternal noncompliance.”
The laptop also contained drafts of public statements.
One described my violent breakdown at dinner.
Another described Elena’s tragic institutionalization.
A third announced that Margaret would raise Leo while I underwent treatment.
Every future had already been written.
Reality was supposed to perform it.
Rosa Delgado contacted us that afternoon.
She had been hiding with relatives in New Mexico.
Margaret’s security men threatened her after she objected to Elena’s schedule.
Rosa saved grocery receipts, staff messages, and audio recordings.
She had also kept the key to a locked pantry at our house.
Margaret told everyone the pantry contained expensive wine.
Rosa said it contained food removed from Elena’s access.
Police opened it.
Shelves were filled with nutritional supplements, formula, prescribed medication, and prepared meals marked with Elena’s name.
Margaret had not lacked the resources to care for her.
She had stored them behind a locked door.
On the lowest shelf, officers found my father’s silver watch.
The watch had disappeared after his funeral.
Inside its back cover was a memory card.
