Chapter 11 - The Kitchen Passage

I followed Margaret through the hotel kitchen.

Chefs and servers pressed themselves against the counters as she moved past them.

The carving stations were still operating.

Knives flashed beneath heat lamps.

The scene dragged me back to my dining room.

Margaret holding the knife.

Elena unconscious beside the table.

Leo screaming.

My mother reached the old pantry.

A hidden door opened behind the shelves.

She entered the founder’s passage and locked it.

Victor limped behind me.

“The passage ends at the underground garage.”

Detective Brooks ordered teams toward every exit.

I struck the pantry door with a serving cart.

The frame cracked.

Victor joined me.

We forced it open.

The tunnel beyond smelled of dust and old concrete.

Margaret’s heels echoed ahead.

Leo’s crying led us forward.

At the garage, a black sedan waited with its engine running.

Dr. Hale stood beside the rear door.

Margaret handed him Leo.

“Take him.”

Hale hesitated.

Police sirens filled the garage.

“You said the transfer papers would protect us.”

“They will.”

“The recordings are everywhere.”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“Do what I paid you to do.”

Hale looked at the child in his arms.

Then toward the police lights entering the ramp.

He made his first decent decision too late to call it courage.

He placed Leo inside an empty security booth and stepped away.

Margaret struck him.

I reached the garage as she drew a small pistol from her purse.

She aimed at the booth.

“If I cannot protect him from you, the court will never let you raise him.”

The words revealed the truth beneath every performance.

Ownership mattered more to her than Leo’s life.

I stopped moving.

“Mom.”

She had not heard that word from me since the dining room.

Her hand trembled.

“You chose her.”

“I chose my wife and child.”

“You chose weakness.”

“No.”

“I stopped calling your control strength.”

Victor appeared behind me.

Margaret saw him.

“You too?”

He leaned against the wall, pale from pain.

“You paid my debts so I would belong to you.”

“You never helped me.”

“You purchased my fear.”

Her pistol moved toward him.

Elena’s voice came from the tunnel.

“Leo.”

The baby began crying harder.

Margaret turned instinctively.

Detective Brooks entered through the side stairwell and fired.

The bullet struck Margaret’s shoulder.

The pistol fell.

I ran to the booth.

Leo’s face was red from crying.

I lifted him and held him against my chest.

Elena reached us seconds later.

She took him into her arms.

Her body shook.

This time, no one removed him.

Officers handcuffed Margaret while paramedics treated her wound.

She looked toward Leo.

“My grandson.”

May you like

Elena held him closer.

“He has a name.”
