Chapter 4 - What the Fox Recorded

The stuffed fox had been a gift from Rosa.

Its camera uploaded recordings to a private cloud account registered under Rosa’s daughter’s name.

Margaret never knew it existed.

Detective Brooks played the first video inside a secure hospital conference room.

The nursery appeared on-screen.

Elena sat in the rocking chair feeding Leo.

Margaret entered carrying a clipboard.

“You are four minutes late starting the laundry.”

“He just fell asleep.”

“That child will not learn discipline if you use him as an excuse.”

“He is six days old.”

Margaret reached down and removed Leo from Elena’s arms.

The baby began crying.

Elena stood.

My mother pointed toward the door.

“Laundry.”

The next recording showed Margaret pouring expressed milk down the sink.

Elena rushed toward her.

“Why are you doing that?”

“It sat too long.”

“It was ten minutes.”

“You are becoming irrational again.”

Dr. Hale appeared in the doorway.

He never examined Elena.

He observed her anger and wrote notes.

A third recording showed Victor entering the nursery.

My brother watched Margaret lock Elena’s phone inside a drawer.

“You cannot keep doing this,” he said.

Margaret looked at him.

“Your gambling account says otherwise.”

Victor went silent.

He knew.

Not everything.

Enough.

The most disturbing video came from two nights before my return.

Elena sat on the floor beside the bassinet.

Her body shook from exhaustion.

Margaret stood over her.

“Sign the guardianship consent.”

“No.”

“You cannot even stand.”

“Because you will not let me sleep.”

“That is not how the court will see it.”

Elena reached for the pen.

Then she noticed the fox.

Her eyes moved directly toward the camera.

She dropped the pen.

“No.”

Margaret slapped her.

Leo began screaming.

My mother leaned closer.

“You have no family with the resources to fight me.”

Elena looked at her.

“My husband will come home.”

Margaret smiled.

“Adrian always comes home after the important decision has already been made.”

The screen went dark.

I left the conference room and vomited into a hospital trash can.

Detective Brooks waited without speaking.

When I could stand again, I looked at her.

“Arrest her.”

“The videos support assault, unlawful restraint, medication tampering, and attempted guardianship fraud.”

“We are preparing warrants.”

“Preparing?”

“Your mother left the house before officers completed the first search.”

“Where did she go?”

“We do not know.”

Victor also disappeared.

Dr. Hale’s clinic was empty.

His appointment server had been wiped.

Margaret had known the dinner might fail.

She had prepared another route.

Brooks handed me a recovered document.

It was a board agenda for Monday morning.

The first motion declared me temporarily unfit to manage Cole Provisions due to violent conduct against my mother.

The second recognized Margaret as Leo’s guardian and proxy holder.

The third removed me as chief executive.

Even my slap had been anticipated.

She stepped in front of the door with a knife because she wanted me to react.

The relatives were not only dinner guests.

They were shareholders waiting to testify.

My mother had built a corporate takeover around my wife’s collapse.

My phone rang.

The caller was Victor.

I answered.

“You need to listen before the police trace this.”

“Where is Margaret?”

“I do not know.”

“You helped her.”

“Yes.”

May you like

His voice broke.

“But if she gets Leo, she will leave the country before Monday morning.”
