Chapter 10 - The Founder’s Banquet

The banquet proceeded despite the abduction alert.

Margaret’s allies insisted canceling would damage employee confidence and company value.

She understood that institutions feared disruption more than wrongdoing.

By six thirty, the ballroom was filled.

News cameras waited outside.

Detective Brooks placed undercover officers among the staff.

Elena attended in a wheelchair against medical advice.

She wore a dark blue dress and held Leo’s hospital blanket across her lap.

I remained beside her.

“You do not have to do this.”

“Yes.”

“She wants everyone to see me as weak.”

“I am weak.”

“I am also here.”

At seven, the orchestra stopped.

Margaret entered through the upper balcony.

Leo rested in her arms.

He wore the white christening gown.

Two private guards followed.

Dr. Hale walked beside them carrying a medical file.

Relief struck me so hard that my knees nearly failed.

Leo was alive.

Margaret approached the microphone.

“My family has experienced a painful crisis.”

“My daughter-in-law suffered a severe postpartum break.”

“My son responded with violence.”

“For the protection of my grandson, I have assumed temporary care.”

Several guests applauded.

They had been told which version of the evening preserved their investments.

Elena wheeled herself toward the center aisle.

“You kidnapped him from a hospital.”

The room became silent.

Margaret smiled.

“You see the confusion.”

“She believes ordinary medical transport was kidnapping.”

Detective Brooks remained near the side doors.

She needed visual confirmation that Leo was safe before moving.

Dr. Hale opened the file.

“I evaluated Mrs. Cole over six weeks.”

“You never examined me,” Elena said.

“I observed extensive evidence.”

“You watched Margaret starve me.”

Murmurs moved through the room.

Margaret lifted Leo slightly.

He began crying.

Every instinct told Elena to rush forward.

She remained still.

I understood the strength that required.

Rebecca stepped onto the stage.

“The court has suspended Dr. Hale’s authority.”

“The emergency guardianship documents are fraudulent.”

She displayed the stuffed-fox recordings on the ballroom screen.

Margaret’s face changed.

The guests watched her pour milk into the sink.

They watched her slap Elena.

They heard her demand the guardianship signature.

Victor appeared in another recording, silent in the doorway.

The room no longer belonged to my mother.

Margaret moved toward the balcony exit.

Detective Brooks gave the signal.

Officers entered.

Owen Crane emerged from behind the curtains with a gun.

He aimed toward Elena.

I stepped in front of her.

The shot never came.

Victor struck Crane from the side with his crutch.

Both men fell.

Margaret ran toward the service stairs carrying Leo.

Elena rose from the wheelchair.

She took one step.

Then another.

“Margaret.”

My mother stopped.

Elena’s voice carried through the ballroom.

“You keep calling him your legacy.”

“He is my son.”

Leo turned toward his mother’s voice.

He stretched one small hand toward her.

Margaret looked down.

May you like

For one second, something uncertain crossed her face.

Then she tightened her hold and disappeared through the service door.
