Chapter 4 – The Last Recording

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Guests ducked behind tables.

Police officers drew their weapons.

Security guards rushed toward every exit.

Alejandro was already on his knees beside his uncle.

"Call an ambulance!"

Rafael Castillo's white dress shirt was stained crimson.

The bullet had struck just below his shoulder.

He was still alive—but barely.

His trembling hand clutched a small digital voice recorder.

"Don't..."

He coughed violently.

"...let her..."

Blood spilled across his lips.

Alejandro gently took the recorder.

"Who?"

Rafael's eyes wandered toward the open ballroom doors.

"...Vivian..."

Those were the last words he managed before losing consciousness.

Thirty Minutes Later

The mansion was completely sealed.

Police searched every room.

Every vehicle.

Every inch of the surrounding grounds.

Vivian Moretti had vanished.

One detective approached Alejandro.

"We found her bedroom."

"And?"

"It's empty."

No clothes.

No jewelry.

No passport.

No computer.

It was as if she had planned her escape months in advance.

Alejandro stared at the voice recorder.

His thumb hovered over the play button.

Elena quietly placed her hand over his.

"You don't have to do this alone."

He nodded.

Together...

They pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Rafael's voice emerged.

Calm.

Measured.

Heavy with regret.

"If you're hearing this...
then Vivian betrayed me too."

Alejandro's jaw tightened.

"Three years ago...
I discovered Elena inherited controlling ownership of Castillo International."

"I owed dangerous people hundreds of millions after a failed investment."

"They offered me one solution."

"Remove Elena."

"I refused."

The recording paused briefly as Rafael sighed.

"But Vivian didn't."

The confession continued.

"She came to me with a plan."

"Drug Elena."

"Forge her identity."

"Keep her alive until every transfer document was signed."

"I believed no one would get hurt."

"I was a coward."

"I let it happen."

Alejandro closed his eyes.

Every nightmare.

Every search.

Every sleepless night.

Had started because one man chose greed over family.

The recording wasn't over.

Rafael's voice grew weaker.

"Six months later...
Vivian stopped listening to me."

"She forged my signature."

"Moved company money."

"Created offshore accounts."

"She didn't want the company anymore."

"She wanted everything."

Alejandro exchanged a glance with the detectives.

The financial crimes unit immediately began tracing the transactions.

The final part of the recording made the room fall silent.

"Alejandro...
Elena never stopped loving you."

"Every day she remembered your name..."

"...Vivian punished her."

"I'm sorry."

"I destroyed my family."

A click.

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

The Hunt

Vivian was no longer a missing socialite.

She was now wanted for kidnapping, attempted murder, financial fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, and multiple homicides.

Every airport received her photograph.

Every private marina was searched.

Every financial account had been frozen.

For forty-eight hours...

Nothing.

Then...

A fisherman called police.

A luxury yacht had been abandoned at a small coastal harbor.

Inside the master cabin...

Investigators found a passport.

Cash.

Diamonds.

And Vivian.

She hadn't escaped.

She'd been waiting.

Calmly sipping coffee as officers entered.

She smiled.

"I wondered how long it would take."

The detective handcuffed her.

"You've lost."

Vivian laughed softly.

"No."

She looked directly at Alejandro.

"The moment Elena disappeared..."

"...you already lost three years you'll never get back."

Alejandro didn't answer.

Because she was right.

Nothing could return those years.

But justice could stop her from stealing another day.

Six Months Later

The grand ballroom of Castillo Manor looked completely different.

The surveillance cameras were gone.

The hidden prison beneath the east wing had been demolished.

In its place stood a memorial garden dedicated to victims of abuse and coercion.

Every former servant had been offered counseling, full compensation, and the choice to remain employed—or begin new lives elsewhere.

Most chose freedom.

Alejandro insisted on paying for all of it.

Inside the boardroom...

The directors gathered for an extraordinary meeting.

Elena entered wearing a navy-blue tailored suit.

No maid's uniform.

No bruises.

No fear.

Only quiet confidence.

Every board member rose to their feet.

The company attorney smiled.

"Mrs. Castillo..."

He placed a leather folder before her.

"As the lawful majority shareholder..."

"...Castillo International is officially restored to your control."

The room erupted into applause.

Elena looked toward Alejandro.

"I don't want revenge."

She signed the documents.

"I want accountability."

The first resolution she approved established a foundation providing legal aid, emergency housing, and medical care for victims of domestic captivity and identity fraud.

Her suffering would become someone else's rescue.

One Year Later

The rain had returned.

Just like the night everything changed.

Alejandro and Elena stood on the balcony overlooking the memorial garden.

He wrapped an arm gently around her.

"I still wake up thinking I'll lose you again."

She leaned against him.

"You won't."

He smiled.

"No more secrets."

"No more silence."

"No more searching."

She took his hand.

"We're finally home."

Far below, the fountain shimmered beneath the stormy sky.

For the first time in years...

The mansion no longer felt like a prison.

It felt like a home.

And somewhere beyond the rain, a new beginning quietly waited.

The End.
