Chapter 2 – The Prison Hidden Behind Luxury

No one answered.
The silence that followed Alejandro's question was heavier than the storm outside.
Rain battered the mansion's towering windows while lightning illuminated the marble foyer for a split second.
Vivian smiled.
It was the same flawless smile she'd worn at charity galas, magazine covers, and board meetings.
Only Alejandro noticed the tiny crack.
A slight tightening around her jaw.
"What did I do?" she repeated softly. "I gave a homeless woman a job."
Alejandro didn't blink.
"My wife isn't homeless."
Vivian shrugged.
"The woman who walked through those gates three years ago didn't remember who she was."
The words struck Elena like a slap.
Her shoulders stiffened.
Alejandro immediately caught it.
"Don't answer for her."
Vivian sighed dramatically.
"She's unstable, Alejandro."
"I said..."
His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
"Don't."
The servants flinched.
Even the security guards shifted uneasily.
For years, they'd only heard stories about the billionaire's temper.
Tonight, they were witnessing it.
Alejandro turned toward Elena.
"I'm taking you upstairs."
Before Elena could move, she instinctively looked toward Vivian.
Permission.
She was waiting for permission.
Alejandro's heart broke.
Three years ago, Elena had run one of Europe's fastest-growing luxury design companies.
She negotiated billion-dollar contracts without fear.
Now she couldn't take one step without looking at another woman first.
Who had done this to her?
Vivian answered before Elena could.
"I'm afraid she still has work to finish."
Alejandro looked at the mop.
Then at Vivian.
"You expect my wife to clean this floor?"
Vivian calmly sipped her wine.
"Employees finish their assignments."
Without another word...
Alejandro bent down.
Picked up the wooden mop.
Snapped it cleanly across his knee.
The crack echoed through the mansion.
Every servant gasped.
The broken handle landed at Vivian's feet.
"My wife," Alejandro said quietly, "will never clean another floor."
Ten minutes later...
The private medical team arrived.
Not one doctor spoke as they examined Elena.
Bruises.
Old scars.
A partially healed fracture in two fingers.
Signs of repeated malnutrition.
The lead physician slowly removed his glasses.
"Sir..."
He hesitated.
"She didn't receive proper medical care for a very long time."
Alejandro felt the room spin.
"How long?"
The doctor glanced at Elena.
"Years."
The word echoed inside Alejandro's head.
Years.
He had searched oceans.
Hired investigators on three continents.
Appeared on television.
Offered twenty-million-dollar rewards.
Meanwhile...
His wife had been sleeping less than fifty feet away from their master bedroom.
Alejandro walked into his private office.
He pressed his thumb against a hidden scanner.
A steel wall quietly slid open.
Inside was something only two people had ever known existed.
The mansion's original security archive.
Years before moving in, Alejandro had secretly installed an independent surveillance system.
Not connected to the household network.
Not accessible to employees.
Only he and Elena knew the password.
Or at least...
They had.
He entered it.
The monitors flickered.
Nothing.
Every recording after Elena's disappearance...
Gone.
Deleted.
His jaw tightened.
Someone had known.
Someone had erased everything.
Then...
One tiny icon blinked in the corner.
Emergency Backup.
Created automatically every thirty days.
Vivian hadn't known about it.
Alejandro opened the oldest surviving file.
The date appeared.
Three years ago.
Eight days after Elena disappeared.
The footage loaded.
His breathing stopped.
The screen showed Elena.
She wasn't wearing a maid's uniform yet.
She was still dressed in the cream-colored sweater she'd worn the morning she vanished.
She looked confused.
Weak.
Disoriented.
She wandered through the kitchen.
Then Vivian entered.
Holding a tray.
A cup of tea.
She smiled kindly.
Exactly the same smile she'd used downstairs moments earlier.
She handed Elena the cup.
Elena drank.
Within seconds...
She collapsed.
Alejandro gripped the desk so hard his knuckles turned white.
"No..."
He watched security guards carry Elena away.
Not outside.
Downstairs.
Toward the basement.
The recording ended.
His phone rang.
"Sir," his chief of security said urgently.
"We found something."
"What?"
"A locked room beneath the east wing."
Alejandro froze.
"The blueprints don't show one."
"They've been altered."
"I'm coming."
The basement smelled of damp concrete.
Dust floated through the flashlight beams.
A heavy steel door stood hidden behind old wine racks.
Fresh fingerprints covered the keypad.
Vivian had been here recently.
Alejandro entered the override code.
The lock clicked.
The steel door slowly opened.
The room beyond wasn't a storage space.
It was a bedroom.
A prison disguised as one.
A narrow bed.
Bars hidden behind decorative curtains.
A surveillance camera mounted above the ceiling fan.
Chains bolted into the wall.
Alejandro couldn't breathe.
One of the nurses gasped.
"Oh my God..."
On the bedside table sat a small notebook.
Alejandro picked it up carefully.
The first pages were empty.
Then...
Tiny handwriting appeared.
The date was nearly three years old.
Day 12
I think my name is Elena.
A woman keeps telling me I'm Emma.
Every time I say my real name...
They give me another injection.
Alejandro felt physically sick.
He turned the page.
Day 31
I remembered Alejandro today.
I told Vivian.
She smiled.
Then she locked me in the dark room for two days.
She said memories are dangerous.
Another page.
Day 94
The servants are kind.
But they're afraid.
If they help me...
They disappear.
Alejandro's hands trembled.
Then he reached the final entry.
Written only three weeks earlier.
If Alejandro is alive...
Please don't let him blame himself.
I tried to come home.
I just couldn't remember the way anymore.
A tear landed on the page.
Alejandro hadn't cried since his father's funeral.
Now...
He couldn't stop.
Behind him...
A quiet voice whispered,
"I wrote that."
He turned.
Elena stood in the doorway.
Wrapped in a blanket.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I remembered everything..."
She looked around the room.
"...the moment I saw you."
Alejandro slowly crossed the room.
He stopped inches away.
Afraid touching her would somehow make her disappear again.
"I'm sorry."
His voice broke.
"I failed you."
Elena gently shook her head.
"No."
She reached for his hand.
"You came back."
For the first time in three years...
Their fingers intertwined.
But upstairs...
Vivian stood alone in her bedroom.
Watching the reunion through a hidden monitor.
She calmly picked up another phone.
"Phase Two," she said.
"Kill the backup witnesses."
Then she smiled.
May you like
Because Alejandro still didn't know...
She hadn't acted alone.
