Chapter 1 – The Voice That Shouldn't Exist

The bucket hit the marble floor with a deafening clang.

Water spread across the polished entrance hall, reflecting the crystal chandelier hanging overhead.

No one moved.

Not the servants.

Not the security guards.

Not even Vivian Moretti, who stood halfway down the grand staircase holding a glass of Bordeaux.

Everyone stared at the billionaire.

Alejandro Castillo looked as though he'd forgotten how to breathe.

His phone slowly slipped from his fingers and landed silently on the Persian rug.

"...Elena?"

His voice barely existed.

The woman in the gray maid's uniform stood frozen.

Bare feet.

Rough hands.

Hair tied back carelessly beneath a plain scarf.

Three years had changed almost everything.

Everything except her eyes.

Those deep brown eyes had once looked at him while they exchanged wedding vows beneath the Italian sunset.

Now they stared back with something far different.

Fear.

Raw.

Silent.

Unmistakable fear.

The bucket rolled across the floor before finally stopping against Alejandro's polished leather shoe.

No one dared pick it up.

Alejandro took one hesitant step forward.

His heartbeat pounded louder than the thunder outside.

"Elena..."

She instinctively stepped backward.

That single movement shattered him.

She was afraid of him.

Why?

Before he could reach her, Vivian's smooth voice floated through the mansion.

"What an emotional reunion."

Alejandro didn't even look away from Elena.

"Explain."

Vivian smiled politely.

"I hired her six months ago."

Alejandro frowned.

"You... hired my wife?"

"I had no idea she was your missing wife."

Her smile never changed.

"She introduced herself as Emma."

Several servants quietly exchanged nervous glances.

Alejandro noticed.

Something was terribly wrong.

He slowly looked around the foyer.

Not one servant met his eyes.

Every single one stared at the floor.

Like frightened children.

His attention returned to Elena.

Her wrists.

Purple bruises.

Half-hidden beneath the sleeves of her uniform.

Fresh.

Not old.

His jaw tightened.

"What happened to your arm?"

Elena immediately hid her wrist behind her back.

"It was... an accident."

The answer came too quickly.

Too perfectly.

As though she had repeated it a hundred times.

Vivian took another sip of wine.

"She's terribly clumsy."

Alejandro's eyes darkened.

He had spent fifteen years building international hotel chains.

He had negotiated with presidents.

Faced hostile takeovers.

Survived boardroom betrayals.

He knew exactly what fear looked like.

And every servant inside this mansion was terrified.

Including his wife.

He slowly bent down, picked up his phone, and dialed one number.

His head of security answered immediately.

"Yes, sir."

"Lock every exit."

Silence.

"...Sir?"

"Now."

The line disconnected.

Vivian's smile twitched for the first time.

"Alejandro..."

"No one leaves."

His voice was ice.

Outside, electronic locks echoed throughout the estate.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The massive iron gates sealed shut.

Security cameras rotated into position.

The mansion had become a fortress.

Vivian laughed softly.

"Is all of this really necessary?"

Alejandro ignored her.

He kept looking at Elena.

"You disappeared three years ago."

She lowered her eyes.

"You never called."

Silence.

"You never sent a message."

Nothing.

"I searched thirty-two countries."

Still nothing.

His voice cracked.

"I buried an empty coffin."

The room became painfully quiet.

Several servants blinked back tears.

Elena's lips trembled.

"I'm..."

She stopped herself.

Vivian interrupted.

"She's obviously overwhelmed."

Alejandro's gaze snapped toward Vivian.

"Don't speak for her."

The words landed like a slap.

Vivian's fingers tightened around her wine glass.

For years she had become accustomed to controlling every conversation inside this house.

Tonight...

Something had changed.

Alejandro turned back toward Elena.

"Look at me."

Slowly...

Very slowly...

She did.

The same warmth still lived somewhere inside those exhausted eyes.

Buried beneath years of suffering.

He saw it.

She saw that he saw it.

For one heartbreaking second...

Neither of them spoke.

Then Elena whispered something so quietly that only Alejandro heard.

"They're watching."

His entire body stiffened.

"They?"

Before she could answer—

A loud crash echoed upstairs.

Everyone looked toward the second floor.

A young maid had accidentally dropped a silver serving tray.

The girl immediately fell to her knees.

"I'm sorry, Miss Vivian!"

Vivian slowly turned her head.

No shouting.

No anger.

Just a cold smile.

"You know the rules."

The young maid's face turned white.

"I... please..."

Without another word, she removed one of her diamond earrings and handed it to Vivian.

Alejandro frowned.

"What is she doing?"

No one answered.

Vivian casually placed the expensive earring into her purse.

"Late employees pay penalties."

Alejandro stared.

"She works for us."

Vivian shrugged.

"They signed contracts."

The young maid quietly wiped away tears before returning to work.

No one protested.

No one questioned it.

Alejandro suddenly realized something horrifying.

This wasn't simply a house.

It was a prison.

One run by fear.

He looked toward the estate manager.

"Bring me every employment contract signed in the last three years."

The elderly manager hesitated.

He glanced nervously at Vivian.

That tiny hesitation told Alejandro everything.

"Now."

The old man hurried away.

Vivian slowly descended the staircase.

Elegant.

Graceful.

Completely composed again.

"You've been under enormous stress these past few years."

She gently placed a hand on Alejandro's shoulder.

"I think you're imagining problems that don't exist."

Alejandro slowly removed her hand.

"I never imagine bruises."

Vivian remained silent.

"I never imagine terrified employees."

Still silent.

"And I certainly don't imagine my missing wife scrubbing the floors of her own home."

For the first time...

Vivian had no response.

At that exact moment, the estate manager returned carrying three thick binders.

Alejandro opened the first one.

Employee records.

Photographs.

Fingerprints.

Payroll.

He turned pages rapidly.

Housekeeper.

Gardener.

Chef.

Driver.

Cleaner.

Then...

He stopped.

A photograph.

Gray uniform.

Hair cut short.

Name:

Emma Rivers.

Employment date:

Three years ago.

Exactly eight days after Elena Castillo disappeared.

Alejandro's blood ran cold.

He looked at the signature.

It wasn't Elena's handwriting.

Someone had forged it.

Then another document slipped from inside the file.

A disciplinary report.

Employee Emma Rivers.

Violation:

Attempting to leave estate grounds without authorization.

Punishment:

Thirty days unpaid confinement.

Alejandro slowly lifted his head.

His eyes found Elena.

She quietly closed her eyes.

One tear rolled down her cheek.

She didn't need to say a single word.

The paperwork had already confessed.

His wife had never vanished.

She had been imprisoned.

Inside her own mansion.

And someone standing only a few feet away...

Had signed every order.

Alejandro slowly turned the final page.

At the bottom...

In elegant handwriting...

One signature appeared again and again.

Vivian Moretti.

Alejandro closed the binder.

The mansion suddenly felt colder.

He looked directly into Vivian's eyes.

May you like

Then he asked the one question that made every servant stop breathing.

"What exactly did you do to my wife?"
