Chapter 6 - SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS

The Mercer Foundation had donated seven million dollars to Ashbury Hall that year.
The grant agreement was simple.
Tuition support.
Meals.
Books.
Transportation.
Counseling.
No scholarship child was supposed to pay for basic school needs.
Elliot had signed the renewal himself.
He had never imagined his own daughter would become the test that exposed the lie.
Naomi arrived at Ashbury within an hour.
She brought two forensic accountants.
Victoria objected.
Dr. Avery overruled her.
By evening, they had discovered something impossible.
Ashbury reported spending nearly eighteen thousand dollars per scholarship student annually on meals and support services.
The actual average was less than six thousand.
“Where did the difference go?”
Elliot asked.
The school finance director stared at the table.
“I don’t know.”
“Try again.”
“I process what the board approves.”
Naomi placed three invoices in front of him.
Luxury donor dinners.
Renovations to the board lounge.
Private car service for visiting trustees.
All billed under scholarship enrichment.
The finance director lowered his eyes.
“Victoria said those events supported fundraising.”
“So hungry children paid for champagne.”
Elliot said.
No one corrected him.
The deeper they looked, the worse it became.
A donor retreat in Aspen had been coded as student leadership development.
A new marble entrance had been partially paid from a financial-access grant.
Consulting fees went to a company owned by Victoria’s cousin.
Another company billed Ashbury for “equity compliance.”
Its registered address belonged to Senator Hargrove’s campaign treasurer.
Elliot stared at the records.
“This is not mismanagement.”
Naomi nodded.
“It looks deliberate.”
Lila sat in a nearby office with a counselor.
Elliot hated that she had to remain anywhere near the building.
But she refused to leave.
“No.”
She told him.
“If I leave now, everyone will think I only stayed because of you.”
“You don’t have to prove anything.”
“I know.”
“Then why stay?”
“Because Noah is still here.”
That answer made Elliot proud and ashamed at the same time.
She had spent weeks hungry and still thought about another child first.
At 7:42 p.m., Naomi received an email from an anonymous address.
One sentence.
YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE WRONG ACCOUNT.
Attached was a spreadsheet.
Naomi opened it.
The file showed payments totaling $3.8 million over four years.
Every transfer came from scholarship funds.
Every transfer ended at the same private educational consulting company.
HARGROVE STRATEGIC PARTNERS.
Elliot looked at Victoria through the glass wall of the board office.
She was speaking urgently into her phone.

For the first time, she no longer looked powerful.
She looked cornered.
