Chapter 17 - LILA’S SPEECH

The Ashbury auditorium was full.
Parents filled every row.
Reporters waited outside.
Students watched from classrooms through a protected livestream.
Victoria sat beside three attorneys.
Charles did not attend.
Peyton sat with her aunt.
Elliot sat in the second row.
Not beside Lila.
She had asked to walk to the podium alone.
Her hands shook.
She placed one page on the lectern.
Then she looked at the board.
“My name is Lila Reed.”
A murmur moved through the room.
“I used Reed because it was my mom’s name.”
“My dad is Elliot Mercer.”
“I didn’t want people to know that.”
“I thought if nobody knew, I could find out who liked me.”
She paused.
“I found out something else.”
She looked toward the scholarship students.
“I found out what happens when adults think a child has no power.”
The room went still.
“I was hungry.”
“I was embarrassed.”
“I let people take my lunch because when I complained, adults told me not to make trouble.”
“I thought being strong meant handling it alone.”
“It doesn’t.”
She looked toward Elliot.
“My dad thought protecting me meant fixing everything.”
“He learned that isn’t always right either.”
A few people smiled.
Elliot did not.
He was too close to tears.
Lila continued.
“Peyton hurt me.”
“She told the truth later.”
“That doesn’t erase what happened.”
“But telling the truth still matters.”
Peyton lowered her head.
Then Lila looked directly at Victoria.
“You called us scholarship kids like that meant we belonged to you.”
“We don’t.”
“You gave us money that wasn’t yours.”
“You took food that was.”
“You told us to be grateful.”
Her voice trembled.
“I am grateful.”
“For Noah.”
“For the parents who spoke.”
“For teachers who finally stopped being afraid.”
“For my dad showing up in the cafeteria wearing no suit.”
A small laugh moved through the room.
Lila smiled.
Then she said the sentence everyone remembered.
“But I will never be grateful for scraps again.”
The auditorium rose.
Not everyone.
Victoria remained seated.
So did her attorneys.
But every scholarship family stood.
Then teachers.
Then parents.
Then several board members.
Elliot stood last.
Lila looked at him.
This time, she was not ashamed to be seen.
The board voted that night.
Victoria Hargrove was removed unanimously.
Every member who approved the Resource Responsibility Initiative resigned or was suspended pending investigation.
But before the room emptied, Naomi received a message.
May you like
Charles Hargrove had called a press conference.
He planned to accuse Elliot of buying the board.
