Chapter 19 - WHAT ELLIOT DID NEXT

The announcement happened in the cafeteria.
The same cafeteria.
The same tall windows.
The same trash cans.
But the room felt different.
Every student had a tray.
Elliot stood beside Lila.
No suit.
Again.
Reporters expected him to announce a takeover.
He did not.
“Ashbury Hall owes money to children.”
He said.
“Not to me.”
The Mercer Foundation would convert part of the disputed grant into a recovery fund.
No debt payment would come from tuition assistance.
No scholarship student would lose a place.
Current teachers would keep their jobs unless misconduct was proven.
The school would repay misused funds gradually through the sale of nonessential assets, reduced board privileges, and future unrestricted fundraising.
Every recovered dollar would support students.
Elliot also announced something larger.
The Mercer Open Table Initiative.
Any participating school accepting Mercer scholarship support would guarantee breakfast and lunch to every student who needed it.
No special line.
No public label.
No child forced to prove hunger.
“Why call it Open Table?”
A reporter asked.
Elliot looked at Lila.
She answered.
“Because nobody should have to ask if they’re allowed to eat.”
Noah clapped first.
Then the cafeteria erupted.
Peyton stood near the back.
She approached Lila afterward.
“I’m leaving Ashbury.”
Lila looked surprised.
“My aunt thinks I need a fresh start.”
“Do you want one?”
Peyton nodded.
“I think so.”
She handed Lila a new sandwich.
Still wrapped.
“I know this is weird.”
Lila stared at it.
Peyton quickly added.
“You don’t have to take it.”
Lila smiled slightly.
Then she took it.
Not because she was hungry.
Because this time it was offered with respect.
She broke it in half.
“You want some?”
Peyton laughed through tears.
“Yeah.”
Elliot watched them from across the room.
He understood something then.
Power could force consequences.
It could not manufacture healing.
That part belonged to people.
Quietly.
May you like
Slowly.
Without applause.
