Chapter 4 – The Brother Who Returned

Elena stared at the photograph as though it were a ghost.
“Adrian?”
Her brother nodded once. The porch light revealed the scar along his jaw that she remembered from childhood, earned when he had fallen through thin lake ice trying to rescue her.
“You were declared dead,” she whispered.
“I know.”
He looked exhausted, older than his forty-three years.
“May I come in?”
They sat across from each other in the quiet living room. Rain tapped against the windows while Adrian explained the impossible.
Twelve years earlier, he had been working overseas when he uncovered a financial network moving money through shell corporations. The people involved were dangerous. He had disappeared before he could testify, and the authorities eventually presumed him dead.
“I stayed hidden to keep you safe,” he said.
Elena folded her arms. “And now?”
“Now the people who wanted me gone are being exposed. Your investigation opened doors that have been locked for years.”
He slid a small envelope across the table.
Inside was a list of names.
Board members. Bank executives. Politicians.
And one name circled in red ink:
Damian Mercer.
“He wasn't the mastermind,” Adrian said quietly. “He was the front man.”
Elena's pulse slowed instead of racing.
That was the dangerous part.
She had spent years preparing to defeat Damian.
She had never prepared for the possibility that someone else had been standing behind him all along.
“Who?” she asked.
Adrian met her eyes.

“A man named Victor Hale. And if he learns I'm alive, he'll come for both of us.”
The war Elena thought she had finished had only just begun.
